Mayor Paul L. Grooms

Paul Grooms moved to Elgin 37 years ago. Mr. Grooms was born in Cheraw, South Carolina. He grew up in different counties such as; Lee and Kershaw County. Paul Grooms lived on a farm out in the country and he had many jobs like at the grocery store and going into service. He went to a watch making class, but soon he went back to the meat market, then worked a little at Fort Jackson until he retired. Mr. Grooms was one of the first people to work at the watch factory. He worked there until it closed.

Paul Grooms thinks that Elgin will grow  to be much larger  than it is now and more people will come to live in Elgin. He also thinks four lanes will be running down Highway number one in Elgin.  Also, he said there will be shopping centers in Elgin 25 years from now.  His future plans are to get more land and destroy the burnt high school.  He also hopes the county will build another high school in the Elgin area.

Mr. Grooms said a typical day  as mayor includes going to the office and  to check with the clerk about what kind of mail they would be getting.    He wants kids to get a excellent education and a job and be able to support a family.
