Moultrie, William
William Moultrie was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1731. His greatest achievement in life was the construction of a fort on Sullivan's Island in Charleston Harbor. The fort was made of Palmetto trees that deflected cannon balls. The fort was later named after him; it is now called Fort Moultrie. William Moultrie also served two terms as governor of South Carolina before dying in 1805.
