CANNONS
The Cannons community was settled in 1787 by
the Cannon family from Culpepper, Virginia.
Each year from 1825 to 1900 they had a big
six-day religious camp meeting. This is
how Cannons Campground got its name.
The Cannon family donated land for the meetings and for the Methodist
Church.
The first school was built in 1820 and was
called McKindrel’s School. It was a
one-room building that was used until 1855.
In 1855, Rural Academy was built. It was a two-story building, with the
grammar school downstairs and the high school upstairs.
In 1913, Cannon Grammar School was built
and used until 1939. It is now a
residence.
In
1939 Cannon Elementary School was built by the Work Project Administration and
had four rooms. It had a library,
office, and gym. It was torn down in
1995.

In
1995, the present Cannon’s Elementary School was built.
