1 John Lee, Esq, born after 1690 in Probably in VA, died after 4 December 1766 in Johnston Co, NC married Mary Bryan born c1705 in VA? Johnston Co, NC married c1720, died c1794 in Johnston Co, NC. Father: William Bryan I, Mother: Alice Macland (proven by the will of Alice's father, John Macland).

Kay Gunn: "Robert Lee didn't die in Johnston Co., NC. His last land record in Johnston Co., NC was 29 March 1766 when he sold 150 a. S/Neuse, marshed above Mill Creek - - W/Burnt Marsh - - part of grant to Theophilus Williams, 16 Feb. 1739. T. Williams sold it to J. Williams 12 Mar. 1745, who sold it to Robert Lee 31 March 1752. Wits: Richard Ingram, Jethro Butler, John Ingram (Jo. Co. Deeds E-1, 128). Robert Lee's name does not appear on the 1784 or 1787 Tax Lists for Johnston Co., NC.

Among records in South Carolina: Robert Lee shows 50 a land near Stony Point, Granville Co., SC 15 Feb. 1769, shows 300 a on upper 3 Runs, Granville Co. 15 Feb. 1769, shows 150 a. Kemp Creek, Cartawba River, Craven Co. 22 Feb. 1771.

9 March 1787: Robert Lee to Wm. Cockram, both of Orangeburgh Dist., Winton Co., SC. for £100 - 100 a. in Winton Co. on Tinkers Creek, waters of Savannah, originally granted to said Robert Lee 3 April 1786, bounded as by a platt. wit: Richard Tradaway, John Hall. Rec. 20 Sept. 1787. (Barnwell Co., SC. Bk. 1, p. 96 & 97)

What probably left a deceptive impression about Robert Lee' whereabouts at the time of his death, was that his will, written 28 Oct 1782 (locale not specified) was proved Nov. 1788, Johnston Co., N.C. - exhibited in Nov court 1788 Johnston Co. For probation by Willis Wiggins and duly proved by oaths of John Ballenger, Jesse Ourvis & Phereby Collins, and admitted to record. (Recorded in bk. No. 1, pg. 111) At a court held for Winton (to become Barnwell) Co., SC 4 Feb. 1789 by virtue of a certificate from Reuben Saunders, clerk of Johnston Co., N.C. the last will & testament of Robert Lee was ordered to be recorded. Rec. 22 Aug. 1789. (Barnwell Co., S.C. Wills Vol. 1, p. 42). So - despite the fact that Robert Lee's will was probated in Johnston Co., NC, the man died in Winton (Barnwell) Co., SC."
