| CAUSEY |
Seek info on William CAUSEY, lived in the Beaufort District
near Pipes Creek c1789-1801. He was a church leader at the Pipes Creek church
where Hadley Moses was Pastor. William's first wife (name unrecorded) died
about 1801. William CAUSEY and five of his married children, the Whittington
family, and Isaac Jackson moved to Amite Co., MS. Seek info on William's
first wife, any children that may have remained in SC and have descendants
there today, and his domicile from about 1782 until 1789. Before the RW I
believe that William lived in Caroline Co., MD at Choptank. He lived there
until 1776 when he spent two years in a Caroline Co. unit and then served
four years with Francis Marion. I don't know if he was in SC or MD or elsewhere
during the years from 1782 until 1789.

| CHEVES |
I am working on a Journal and Muster Roll for the Second Seminole War
1835 - 1842. In the Feb., 1836 Muster Roll Landon Cheves, II is shown as
"Joined at Picolata." This Muster Roll was made on board the steam boat,
James Boatwright, as they stopped at Savannah as they steamed along from
Gramby on the Congaree at Columbia, SC going to St. Augustine, FL. It appears
that Landon joined them near Savannah after the roll was completed. Most
of the other one hundred or so men were shown as, "From What Place" then
listing his home district, Richland, Edgefield, Sumter and so forth.
Landon's father, Judge Landon Cheves, was said to have retired from
political life and operated a Rice Plantation near Susannah from about 1835
until his death in 1857. I suspect that Picolata is on the Susannah River
in western Beaufort Co., SC and that the Delta Plantation was also near this
place. So far, I have been unable to locate either of these on a map and
would appreciate help on this. Judge Cheves was also a historian and an architect
of sorts. He designed a number of his houses in SC and PA. It sure would
be great to find a picture of his Delta Plantation. 18 July 2002 |

| CLELAND |
JOHN CLELAND was born Feb 19, 1839, in the Beaufort District.
Some sources say he may have lived near the Ridgeland/Gillisonville area,
now JASPER county. Seek info on his parentage! There was a JOHN CLELAND with
a family in the S.C. 1840 Census, but no evidence in 1850. In an application
for Civil War pension in 1900, John Cleland stated that he came to Pierce
County, Georgia in 1847, but no evidence in Georgia 1850 census. He was found
in Pierce County, Georgia in the 1860 census married to Elender (believed
to be SMITH-not confirmed) They named their first son HANSFORD, apparently
after a relative.... their second child was named MARY. This was a real patriot
of the Civil War cause, serving 3 1/2 years in Northern Virginia while Sherman
was marching through Georgia and S.C. He was at the Appomatix surrender.
In Georgia he was associated with the family SURNAMES of RIGGINS, LUGG, ELIZABETH
RICE YOUMANS, JAMES S. YOUMANS.

Jesse Davis, upon his father's death and later married Joseph Ann Elizabeth
Lee, daughter of Joseph and Catherine Parker Lee of Sylvania, GA. A letter
written by Eli's grandson indicates the town the family may have been from
is Brett, SC although that town doesn't seem to be in existence today (Any
clue as to what it's name is now?) Other info implies the family was from
the area in SC across from Effingham, Co., GA which would be Hampton or Jasper
counties today, but Beaufort county back in 1836. I'm willing to share Cox
info from this time period forward with interested parties.
