The Beaufort County Courthouse was removed to Gillisonville 19 December 1840, and was burned by Sherman's army in 1865.  The county seat was returned to Beaufort 15 Sept. 1868.  (Varnville, SC 1872-1997 R-M E. Williams, 1998)
