This is how the double s (ss) was written in the early part of the 19th century. This is a record of Thomas and Eli Bassett, written in 1804, by the Clerk of Court, George Latham (Orasmus D. Allen did not yet serve, that was 1806 to infinity! :>) ). This record is in Barnwell Deed Book 3 page 213 (beginning of deed is on page 212). There are numerous instances.
