Census Data for The "Turks" of Sumter County
The on line 1790 Sumter Co. census does not show any Benenhaleys in Sumter County, but does show two Scotts:

1810, there were only 7 Benenhaleys in a single family founded in 1805. In 1810 census for Sumter District, SC (pg 221, sixth name from top) there was a Joseph Belenhaley, as the head of house of a family of seven including himself. From later sources, he is the same man as Joseph Benengeli (the spelling Anglicized to Benenhaley, but pronounced exactly the same as Benengeli ), him with wife, Elizabeth and their five children, ages 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. Some researchers think the first Joseph was of Turkey and of Arabic descent.
1819, Federal (rev. war) Pension: James Scott, Sumter Dist., Private, SC Continental Lline, $96 allowance, $790 received, 17 May 1819 pension started, age 81, so he was born c1738.
1820, there were 12 in a single family
1830 there were 7 in a single family
1840 There were 13 in three Benenhaley homes
1850 There were 18- 12 Benenhaleys and 3 Oxendines in three families. In 1850 census, house # 1332, Joseph Benenhaley (son of Joseph #1) was 45, a planter, whose wife was Catherine. Scott Benenhaley, age 30. Their children were William, 12, Thomas, 10, Elizabeth 8, Randall, 5, Mary Ann (the Benenhaley with blue eyes), 4. She, later in life, expressed her Scott mother and Benenhaley father, and her own blue eyes. This Joseph (junior) had 10 acres, 2 horses, 2 cows and 2 mules.

Note the "mulatto" designation can not be taken literally in these data. The Scotts were "classified" as white in 1790, then sometimes mulatto, sometimes black, sometimes white!
