Little is known of the very early history of the Gill family of Wake County. One of the earliest records found is of David Gill of Warren County, North Carolina, buying land in Wake County in 1784. From this David Gill came the large Wake County Gill family. David had seven children, his son, David, Jr. had 10 children, and his son, Jesse, had 11 children.

It is believed that David Gill (estimated by FOC as born before c1758) married a daughter of John and Elizabeth Mann of Wake County, but her first name is unknown. Their children were: James; Elizabeth; Jesse, who married Tabitha Pace; Susanah; Isaac, who married Edith Mobley; John; and David, who married Salley Brice.

David, Jr. and Salley Brice had the following children as listed on the 1850 Federal Census of Wake County: Francis G.; Henry P.; Tilas; Elgis; Jane E.; Cleophas; Amelia; Susan; Anfridana; and David D.

Fortunately much is known about the descendants of Jesse and Tabitha Pace Gill. Tabitha was the daughter of Buckner Pace. Little is known of this Buckner Pace, although some researchers think that he was the son of John and Ann Russell Pace of Brunswick County, Virginia. Jesse Gill and Tabitha Pace were married in Wake County on 26 October 1792.  If he was at least 21 when they married, he was born before 1771. The reason that much is known about the descendants of Jesse and Tabitha is because Jesse left a rather large estate at his death and this estate was contested in the Wake County Courts for many years. The many papers in this file contains the names of Jesse's children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. These papers also list many death dates, first and second husbands and wives, and places of residence of the different descendants. Jesse Gill and Tabitha Pace Gill had the following 11 children:

1. Nancy Ann Gill married first Rose Wormley Ray on 24 December 1813 in Wake County. They had two sons: Buckner Ray and Henry C. Ray. Henry C. Ray married Cyntha G. Bailey in 1839 and they had Mary Eliza who married James A. Alien, Cynthia Paridadi, and Sarah Anderson who married William D. Ray. Nancy Ann Gill Ray married second Edward A. Parkam. They had eight children: Edward Amacy, Caroline, Avery, John, Emeline, William W. Buckner, Obidience (Bidy.)
2. Elizabeth Gill "Betsey" married 27 october 1814 in Wake County to William Shipp. (See The Shipp Family History).
3. Agnes Gill married James Jones on 29 January 1822.
4. Buckner Gill married in Wake County 19 August 1832 to Sarah Roberts. They had four children who all were in Tennessee by 1860:
   1. James Gill
   2. Elizabeth Gill
   3. Sarah C. Gill who married an Andrews, and
   4. Thomas G. Gill
5. John Gill married Mary Reves on 2 May 1827 in Wake County. They had two children,
   1. William Gill who was born in 1844 and
   2. Elizabeth Gill who was born in 1846.
6. Burton Gill married Barbara Ann. Her last name is unknown. Burton died before his father. Burton and Barbara Ann had nine children:
   1. Burton J. Gill
   2. Thomas Gill
   3. Lewis Turner Gill
   4. Americus Gill
   5. Caroline Gill who married Peter C. Pupree
   6. David Gill
   7. Susan Gill
   8. Joseph Gill
   9. Duncan Gill
7. Terrell Gill was born in 1814 in Wake County. He married Elizabeth Perry on 29 January 1842. Terrell Gill married second Catharine Franks on 24 March 1852 in Wake County. Terrell Gill and Elizabeth Perry had four children:
   1. Eliza M. Gill
   2. Nicholas L. Gill
   3. Andrew J. Gill
   4. Elizabeth Gill.
8. Mahaly Gill married Joseph Bailey on 17 August 1835 and this family went to Tennessee.
9. Payton Gill married 5 October 1838 in Wake County to Sarah Hollingsworth and this family also went to Tennessee.
10. William Gill, son of Jesse and Tabitha Gill, seems to have left home while quite young and nothing is known about him.
