Tuesday, May l0, 1864. — General H. G. Wright succeeded the lamented Sedgwick in the command of the Sixth corps.

The Tenth were behind the breastworks, when about noon they were ordered to the front in a grove of pines and supported the picket line.

Shelling from heavy guns was kept up by both armies all day. Several assaults were made  during the day by our troops on the enemy's entrenchments, but each time we were forced to retire. Two brigades of the Sixth corps, under Generals Russell and Upton, were successful, and captured some nine hundred prisoners, but were obliged to fall back for want of support, taking their prisoners along with them. During this day's engagement some nine thousand Unionists and eight thousand Confederates were reported as killed, wounded and captured.

Newspaper chipping, no date, but must have been Logan, Co, Ill. (Sent to me by Cookie Huckaby):

William Green, or Uncle Billy as he was familiarly called, left Newburyport, Mass with his family, with Logan County, Illinois as their destination in June 1853. They crossed Lake Erie on a boat, then traveled to Chicago and from there to LaSalle, then down the Illinois river to Pekin. Here They were met by William Simpson Sr. Father of William Simpson of Emden, and known by all the older settlers as Grand-father Simpson, who was a warm friend of the family and who Moved  them to Logan County by wagon.

The family consisted of William Green, wife and four sons, Namely: William J., Thomas G., Samuel F., and John H. The latter the Writer of this article.

They were the parents of seven children, two of whom died in infancy.

He furnished two sons for the Civil War - William and Samuel and they occupy soldiers graves with appropriate Headstones in Bethel Cemetery.

Their old home where they lived so long and reared their family is the one now owned by Jake Gerdes.

Mr. Green kindly reminds us of other pioneers and their names we had overlooked and forgotten.

John Bovee owned the farm now the home of John McCormick. They settled there in the early fifties and had a family of four sons and one daughter.

The farm now owned by John Jeckle was settled by a man by the name of Hannah who had a family of eight children. This later was the home of James Hayes another of the old settlers.

The home of the late Henry Alexander was formerly owned by an uncle, Payton Alexander who had a family of five Children.

The old Sheets home, now owned by Mrs. Jacob Sheets, formerly belonged to George Brining, who had two children, Charles and Chryssie.

James Ewing, spoken of before as a pioneer, owned the 80 Acres where Ullie N. Rademaker now lives.

He says another old settler we must not forget was James Phillips, who settled the H.A. J Paul homestead, bought it raw prairie, and broke it out with a big plow and three yoke of oxen. - J.H. Green, Portage Des Sioux, Missouri

Blackwell, or Blackwell High Township, contains the hamlets of High and Low Burnthwaite, Durdar, Ratten Raw, and Stoneraise, with several scattered houses situated from three to four miles south of Carlisle. Its population in 1846 was 324, and it contains 2323 acres of land, of the rateable value of £1565 10s.,and belonging to several proprietors, the largest of whom is Mr. Joseph Scott, but Sir George Musgrave, Bart. is lord of the manor, which was anciently a parcel of the forest of Inglewood, but was given by Henry I to Oswald de Logis, baron of Wigton. Margaret de Wigton, the heiress of this baronial house, gave the manor, in the reign of Edward III to Sir Robert Parvinge, the king's sergeant at law, for his successful efforts in conducting her cause when her title to the barony was impugned by the heir-at-law, Sir Robt. de Bridekirk, on the ground of her mother's incontinency. Sir Robert de Parvinge afterwards became Lord Chancellor and Lord High Treasurer, and in 1339 obtained a licence to enclose his woods. His descendants sold their township to Sir William Stapleton, who sold it to lord Dacre, from whom it passed to Thomas, earl of Sussex, whose co-heiress conveyed it to Sir Christopher Musgrave, ancestor of the present proprietor, Sir George Musgrave, Bart. Thomas Lowry, by will dated 22nd November, 1779, bequeathed £200 to this township, one half of the interest of which to be paid to the schoolmaster, and the other half to poor widows. In 1785 Thomas Pattinson left the interest of £10 to the schoolmaster of Blackhall; and in 1798, Mrs. Grace Graham bequeathed £100 to Durdar School.

(NOTE: Blackwell is pronounced Blekell)

Blackwell, or Blackhall (Low) township has a small village, two miles S. from Carlisle, and the hamlets of Floshes, and Scugger Houses, contains 200 souls, and 930 acres, of the rateable value of £1247 belonging to the Lowry, Dykes, Bell, Wilson, Wild, and a few other families. Sir George Musgrave, Bart. is lord of the manor, and owner of Blackwell Hall, a very ancient farm house, on a commanding height, above the river Caldew. The name Blackwell, Blackhall, Blackhill, or Blackhell, as it is variously called, is said to be derived from its having been anciently a black heathy district, being part of Inglewood forest. In an old mansion here is a large oak table, and a drinking cup, said to have been used by the chevalier prince Charles, in 1745; and in 1841, Mr. Duncan Mc'Alpin found a curious seal in his garden, supposed to have belonged to the same extraordinary individual.

Notes for WILLIAM DANIEL COYKENDALL:

WILLIAM D. COYKENDALL.   A good farming property of one hundred and sixty acres in Union townsh ip engages the attention of William D. Coykendall. who was born in Clinton county, Iowa, on the 26th of December, 1859. He is a son of Dan iel and Elizabeth (Scott) Coykendall, both natives of the state of New York. Daniel Coykendall was a son of Joel and Betsy (Driggs) Coyken dall, the father a native of the Empire state. The mother was a daugh ter of Daniel Dow Driggs, a distinguished lieutenant of the war of 1812 who was wounded at Sacket Harbor. He married Minerva Steel whose father was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. Both Mr. and Mrs. Joel Coykendall attained a ripe old age, making their home in the state of New York where he followed farming. To them were born seven children: Daniel, Joseph, Jane, Melvina, Elizabeth, Cyrus and Morris, three of whom, the first and the last two were volunteers in the Civil war. Daniel Coyken- dall was reared to manhood in the state of his birth, from whence he moved to Illinois, locating in the vicinity of Canton, Fulton county, where he en gaged in farming. From there he removed to Iowa about 1857, settling in Clinton county, where he was residing at the breaking out of the war. He enlisted as a private in Company D, Twenty-sixth Iowa Volunteer Infantry and went to the front. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Scott Coykendall, was a daughter of Nathan Scott, in whose family were eleven children: William, George, Nathan B., Emily and Elizabeth, while the others died in infancy. To Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Coykendall were born eight children, five of whom attained maturity: Nathan, who is a resident of Harper, Kansas; Alice, the deceased wife of A. E. White; Edwin, who is living in Alexandria, Minne sota; William D., our subject; and Flora, the wife of S. J. Alger. The mother passed away in 1874, at the age of forty-nine years, following which the father made his home with his son William D. and his daughter, Mrs. Alger, until his demise, which occurred at the age of eighty-six years, on the nth of December, 1910.   The early years in the life of William D. Coykendall were spent on the homestead where he was born in Clinton county, whose district schools provided him with an education. As the mother passed away when he was only fourteen years old, he knew little of home life during his youth, very soon thereafter going to work by the month as a farm hand. After he had acquired the capital and experience to enable him to begin to work for hims elf, he rented some land in Clinton county, which he cultivated for two years. In 1883 he came to Carroll county, locating within a mile of his present homestead. He first bought fifty-three acres which he operated for two years with such success that he was able to add to his tract another fif ty-three acres. At the present time he owns one hundred and sixty acres, upon which he has placed a number of improvements.

On the 19th of October, 1881, Mr. Coykendall was united in marriage to Miss Sarah J. Bottomly, a daughter of John and Emma (Gaddis) Bot tomly. Mrs. Coykendall was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and is of English extraction, her parents having emigrated from the mother coun try in childhood. They were married in Massachusetts, whence they mi- grated to Martin county, Minnesota, where they bought stock and intended to take up a claim, but located in Illinois instead. Mr. Bottomly passed away in Missouri in 1897, at the age of about seventy-one years, while the demise of his wife occurred in Kansas City in 1886, after she had passed the fifty-eighth anniversary of her birth. The paternal grandfather, John Bottomly, who was a farmer in England, took for his wife Sarah Tetlow, and to them were born thirteen children. Those who attained maturity were as follows: John, Seth, Robert, James, Mary, Elizabeth and Hannah. The maternal grandfather, Joseph Gaddis, was a native of Scotland, as the name would suggest, his vocation being that of a sailor. He married Mary Gill and to them were also born thirteen children, eleven of whom reached ma turity, namely: William, Joseph. James, llannaii, Mary, Isabel, Eleanor, Margaret, Emma, Jane and Sarah. Air. Gaddis passed away in Providence, Idode Island, but his wife, who survived him twenty-three years, was liv ing in Hanover, Illinois, at the time of her demise. Mr. and Mrs. John Bottomly were the parents of seven children, four of whom lived to ma turity : James; Sarah J., now Mrs. Coykendall ; John C. and Mary Emma.

Mr. and Mrs. Coykendall are the parents of a son and a daughter: Alice, who married Cleveland M. Straight, of Bear Creek, Montana; and Claude, who graduated from the engineering department of Ames College in 1910, and is now following his profession in Memphis, Tennessee.   Both Mr. and Mrs. Coykendall affiliate with the United Brethren church of Carrollton, and politically he is a republican. He is meeting with suc cess in his agricultural pursuits and is known as one of the substantial farmers of Union township.   This material is from “The History of Carroll County Iowa”, published in 1912.  The material about Willian D Coykenall starts on page 135 and can be found at;  http://www.archive.org/details/historyofcarroll02macl

Illustrated History of Pawtucket, Central Falls and Vicinity (Rhode Island, USA), by Henry R. Caufield, 1897; "Biographies of Prominent Citizens" pp. 322 - 323:

This is from Isaac Gill Jr's biography in the Pawtucket history.

"His father, Isaac Gill, Sr., was born in Manchester, England in 1817, and emigrated to Newport, R.I., in 1842. There he became acquainted with his future wife, Agnes Frances, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1821, and had been brought to America by her parents when a young child. Shortly after their marriage, gold was discovered in California, and the young husband, like many others, decided to try his fortune in the Far West.

Accordingly he became one of the earliest "forty-niners" who entered California. He remained in the West 15 or 16 years, at the end of which time he returned to his former home in Newport, R.I., where he remained till the date of his death in 1880.

Abstract:

ISAAC GILL OF PAWTUCKET.; Reputed Dictator of Rhode Island Elections Dies at 76.Special to The New York Times. October 12, 1927,, Section RADIO, Page 27

"Illustrated History of Pawtucket, Central Falls and Vicinity" (Rhode Island, USA) by Henry R. Caufield, 1897 "Biographies of Prominent Citizens" pp. 322 - 323: "GILL, Isaac, the present efficient engineer for the Dunnell Manufacturing Company, was born in 1850 and is of Scotch-English parentage. His father, Isaac Gill, Sr., was born in Manchester, England, in 1817, and emigrated to Newport, R. I., in 1842. Accordingly he became one of the earliest 'forty-niners' who entered California. He remained in the West 15 or 16 years, at the end of which time he returned to his former home in Newport, R. I., where he remained till the date of his death in 1880. Isaac, the son, was educated in the public schools of Newport up to his 13th year. At the end of that time, his father being far away from his family, circumstances demanded that he should seek employment. Accordingly he was employed by Caswell, Mark & Co., a drug firm of Newport, for whom he worked four years. At the age of 17 he came to Pawtucket and went to work for Cole Bros., steam fire engine builders, where he remained for eight years. In 1876 he was employed by the Dunnell Manufacturing Co. as engineer, with which concern he yet remains. Mr. Gill has ever been a steady, straightforward, sincere and consistent workman. He is a man of sound judgement and good business policy as is evidenced by the number of years he has represented his ward in the city council. He was elected a member of the town council of 1885 by the Democrats, with whom he always affliates. He represented the second ward in the city council from 1886 to 1888 inclusive, and again in 1895 and 1896. Aside from his business and official duties he is a man of fraternal and kindly spirit, as is shown by the distinction he has achieved amongst his fellow Free Masons, in which order he has long been a member. Mr. Gill has in his possession four tokens of gold bestowed on him at different times by the Masonic order. He is past master of Union Lodge; past high priest Pawtucket Royal Arch Chapter; past commander Holy Sepulchre Commandery; past grand T. I. M. grand council of Rhode Island. It is in Masonry that Mr. Gill finds his chief interest, and his career among his brethren best shows in what way that interest is received. He is one of the board of directors of the Masonic Temple Co., which is empowered by the Order to execute all plans necessary for the erection of the new Masonic hall on High street. In bygone days Mr. Gill was an ardent member of the Pawtucket Boat Club, and pulled an oar in the crew which created so much enthusiasm and received such praise in those races that used to stir the city from centre to circumference with excitement and anticipation. In 1891 he was married to Annie Macklin, of Pawtucket. They have one boy, Isaac, who is now in his fourth year. Their home is at 18 Pond street." illustration on page 322: photo, Isaac Gill, Councilman, Second Ward, Pawtucket.

ULERY   Remains of Mrs. Clara Ulery, of the Muncy nursing home, 409 N. Grand Ave. E., are at the O'Donnell funeral home where services will be held at 1:30 p. m. Wednesday, Rev. H. M. Hildebrandt officiating. Burial in Carlyle cemetery, Mt. Pulaski.

Grandson of Clara, Marion Estuace Thomas, lived with Clara Thomas for many years and thought very highly of her. He remembers her as  strong willed, stubborn, and hard working with a quick temper, but very devoted to those she loved.  Clara may not have married Isaac, but they lived together. The photos of them were taken about 1935.

Clara made a silk hankie to carry at her wedding to John Thomas (10 Oct 1889) and gave it to Jessie Ellen Phillips to carry at her wedding (12 Oct 1910) to Earl Logan Thomas. This hankie was given to Mary Schwartz to carry at her wedding (21 Oct 1935) to Marion E. Thomas. The next wedding it was carried was when Lois E. Thomas married Harry David Murray, then again when Lois Earline Thomas married (July 1965) John Edward Boyd.  Lois gave it to her daughter, Jacqueline Annette Boyd, to carry at her wedding 16 Feb 1991 when whe married James Westbrook. Lois will again carry it when she marries James Edward Branch. Hopefully Darla Danielle Murray, Granddaughter of Lois will carry it when she gets married...Notes by Lois E. Thomas 1999 (See photo of silk hanky in photos of John C. Thomas)
