C.  Ingram Allen Gill  b. 5 Feb. 1780 in Lunenburg Co., Virginia, d. 14 July 1853 in Iredell Co., North Carolina., son of William Gill of Iredell Co., NC, married Mary (Polly) Tomlinson about 1804, probably in Iredell Co., North Carolina. They are both buried in the Young Cemetery in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

My note:  There were two daughters in Ingram's household for the 1830 census in the age 5-9 category.  Both were gone by the 1840 census.  They are not included in the above list of children. There are two small gravestones, in the part of the Young family cemetery where the Gills are buried, marked simply "S.G." and W.G."  I assume they are the markers for Ingram's two "missing" daughters.

On the 1783 Lunenburg Co., Virginia, tithes list, father William Gill's household consisted of himself, his wife Susannah and three children  --  probably Judith, William (Jr.) and Ingram:

Ingram Allen Gill married Mary (Polly) Tomlinson about 1804, probably in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

The first records I have found listing Ingram Allen Gill by name are two deeds from December 1807:

Iredell Co., NC (Book F, pg. 805) 20 Jan. 1807 Charles (x) Matterson to Lewis Handkins for $100, 40 acres on fork of middle Rockey creek joining Callahan and Gill, part of 115 acres purchased of William Bone, 1805. Wit: Goodrich Moore, Caleb Condrey. 19 Nov. 1808 (deed abstract by Lois M. P. Schneider, C.G.R.S., Statesville, NC April 2, 1986).

Iredell Co., North Carolina, Book G, pg. 40:  8 Dec. 1807 Charles (x) Mattison to Ingram Allen Gill for $200, 75 acres on south fork of middle Rockey creek joining Lewis Hankins, Gill and Blankenship, part of a grant to James Bone. wit: Peter Claywell, Arthur Blankenship. reg. 11 Feb. 1809.

Ingram Allen Gill was on the 1810 census in Iredell Co., North Carolina, living next door to his widowed mother:

Allen Gill  201//1001  1 slave [2m under 10 (Francis, William), 1m 16-25 (Ingram), 1f under 10 (Nancy) 1f 26-44 (Mary)]

Ingram Allen Gill witnessed a deed on 15 June 1813:

Iredell Co., North Carolina, Book J, pg. 208: 15 June 1813 John (x) Francis and Dedema (x) Francis to John McQuire for $200, 96 acres on middle fork of Rocky creek joining Hardin's old survey, part of 480 acres granted to John Archebald from the legatees of Robert Harden, deceased in 1786 and conveyed to John Griffith 1797, then to

Wm. Kennedy in 1798 and to William Judkins in 1800. Wit: Ingram A. Gill, Thomas Francis.

In May 1816 Ingram Allen Gill gave bond for the administrator of an estate:

Iredell County, North Carolina, Abstracts of the Minutes of the court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1815-1822, 1826-1834, 1839-1850, by Russell C. Black, Jr.: "May Court 1816: May 1816 Letters of Administration granted to James Campbell and Sally?, the widow, on the estate of Burrell Barker. Qualified and gave bond with Robert Simonton and Allen Gill bail...f3000."

According to William (Sr) Gill's 1797 will, his property was to be distributed among his children when the youngest (Henry) turned age 21.  That happened about 1816/1817.  On 4 December 1817, Ingram Allen Gill's brother, Thomas Y. Gill of Wilkes Co., Georgia, deeded his share of William Gill's estate to Ingram A. Gill of Iredell Co, North Carolina.  An abstract of the deed transferring Thomas Young Gill's interest in the land to Ingram is in Gill: abstracts from records in southern states and genealogical notes, Eva Turner Clark,  New York: R.R. Smith, 1939,  page 112:

"Thomas Y. Gill (son of William Gill of Iredell Co., will 1797), of the State of Georgia and County of Wilkes, to Ingram A. Gill of Iredell Co., N.C., consideration of $116.66, a certain tract of land in Iredell on the Red bank Branch of South Yadkin, it being the tract of land belonging to the estate of William Gill, dec'd , the said Thomas Y. Gill being heir to the one-sixth part of the estate  . . . beginning at an oak . . .Wm. McRay corner on John Calahain's line" 4 Dec. 1817. Wit: John Burke, Archibald Tomlinson, Henry Gill.  Deeds J, 570."

Ingram Allen Gill witnessed a deed on 31 Dec 1818:

Iredell Co., NC Deed Abstracts Books R, S, & T 1834-1841, By Russell C. Black, Jr., page 825. Deed Book T, p. 117. Dated 31 Dec 1818. "Sarah Shadburn, widow of William Shadburn, late of Burnswick Co., VA, now of Iredell Co., daughter and heir of Burwell Barker, decd., late of Iredell Co., to James Campbell, for $150, all her interest in the estate real and personal of the sd Burwell Barker. Wit: Ingram A. Gill jurat. prov Aug. 1837. Reg. 30 Sept. 1837.

Ingram Allen Gill and his mother Susannah Gill were on the 1820 census in Iredell Co., North Carolina.  I think there is census-taker error on Ingram's household, because he appears in the age 18-25 category rather than in the 26-44 category:

1820  >  NORTH CAROLINA   >  IREDELL  >  NO TWP LISTED Series: M33  Roll: 80  Page: 150

Susannah Gill  0001//00101  plus 12 slaves [1m 26-44 (Henry), 1f 16-25 (Caroline Donalson? Henry's wife?) 1f 45+ (Susannah)]

On 21 May 1827, brother Henry Gill deeded Henry's wife's share of her father James Reid's estate to Ingram Allen Gill:

"Henry Gill of Iredell Co., to Ingram A. Gill, same Co., consideration of $1500, deed for negroes, horses, stock, crops, furniture, and all the right, title, and interest I now have in the estate of James Reid, dec'd, my wife's father, late of Iredell county; also all books, notes, etc. due from any person whatsoever; 21 May 1827. Deeds M1043." (Gill: abstracts from records in southern states and genealogical notes, Eva Turner Clark,  New York: R.R. Smith, 1939,  page 105.)

Ingram Allen Gill purchased land on 7 November 1826:

Iredell Co., North Carolina, Book M, pg. 647: 7 Nov. 1826 John (x) Francis to Ingram A. Gill for $600, 164 acres on waters of Rocky creek, joining Alex. Long, Arnold Holland, Wm. White, John Moore. Wit: Wm. White, Alexdr. Long. Nov 1826.

Mother Susannah Gill wrote her will on 14 April 1828.  It mentioned her living children,  Allen Gill, William Gill, Thomas Gill, Rebecca Gill King and Henry Gill, and her granddaughter Caroline Louisa (Donalson) Weaver:

Son Francis Gill married Mary Holland about 1830, probably in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

Daughter Susan Gill married Perry H. Holland about 1836 in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

Daughter Nancy N. Gill married James Sharpe Allison on 27 October 1836, probably in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

On 17 Jan 1839, David Queen and Radford J. Queen gave a mortgage deed to Ingram Allen Gill:

Deed Book S, p 342, 17 Jan 1839, David Queen and Radford J. Queen to Ingram A. Gill, Wm. M. Allen, A. Mayberry, John & Cromwell Green). If paid, etc., mort. deed null & void. Signed by David Queen & Radford J. Queen.

Ingram Allen Gill was on the 1840 census in Iredell Co, North Carolina.  I believe the children of his son Francis, Thomas M. and Mary Gill, were living with Ingram:

Son William Gill married Elizabeth Dobbins Jones abt. 1843, probably in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

Mary Tomlinson Gill died 23 Nov. 1844, in Iredell Co., North Carolina, and is buried in the Young Family Cemetery in Iredell Co., North Carolina, near her in-laws, William and Susannah Young Gill:

Mary Gill's date of death also comes from Young-Houston-Dalton Bible, 1793-1853, Genealogical Society of Rowan Co., NC, Journal Vol. 7, No. 4, Dec 1993, p.140.

Daughter Sarah Gill married Robert Simonton Lawrence on 5 March 1845 in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

Daughter Mary Gill married Joseph Allen Allison on 6 May 1845 in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

Ingram Allen Gill was a widower on the 1850 census. His son Thomas and daughter Elizabeth were living with him.  He also had two grandchildren in the household, Thomas M. Gill and Mary Gill. I believe they were the children of son Francis, who was probably dead by 1850:

Ingram Allen Gill died on14 Jul 1853 "aged 73 years, 5 months, 9 days" and is buried with his wife and parents in the Young Family Cemetery, Iredell Co., North Carolina:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GScid=2129389&GRid=10217524&

Details about the children of Ingram and Mary Gill:

   1. Francis Melmouth Gill, b. 2 Jun 1805, in Iredell Co., North Carolina,  d. abt. 27 Jul 1836, in Iredell Co., North Carolina.  He married <Mary Holland> about 1830, probably in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

The children of Francis Melmouth Gill:

a.  Thomas M. Gill b. abt. Jan 1831 in Iredell Co., North Carolina, d. after the 1900 census, perhaps buried in the cemetery at Snow Creek Methodist Church, Harmony, Iredell Co., North Carolina. He married Prudence Malvinia LNU about 1868, probably in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

b.  Mary Gill b. abt. 1835 in Iredell Co., North Carolina, d. after the 1850 census.  No further information.

I believe Francis Melmouth Gill's name and dates come from a transcription of a family bible.  I have not seen either the bible or the transcription myself  but I suspect that usual year of death  listed for him --  1856  -- may be a mistranscription of 1836.  I believe Francis died about 1836, around the time his daughter Mary was born.  It appears that his children Thomas M. Gill and Mary Gill were living with Ingram and Mary Gill for the 1840 census.  His two children were still living with Ingram Gill for the 1850 census.

The middle name "Melmouth" is common in the descendents of Thomas Cadet Young, but very uncommon in the general population.

A son the age of Francis was on the 1810-1830 censuses with Ingram and Mary Gill parents:

Francis M. Gill is said to have married Mary Holland about 1830, probably in Iredell Co., North Carolina.  It is possible that Mary Holland was the sister of Perry H. Holland who had married Susan Gill about 1830 in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

I believe Francis Gill died and  his wife about 1836 and their two children, Thomas M. and Mary Gill, were living with Ingram and Mary Gill for the 1840 census:

Ingram Allen Gill was a widower on the 1850 census. He had two grandchildren in the household, Thomas M. Gill and Mary Gill. I believe they were the children of Francis M. Gill and Mary Holland:

I have not found Francis M. Gill on the 1850 census anywhere, which makes it likely that he was dead before the 1850 census.

Son Thomas M. Gill served in the Civil War.  He enlisted in Company B of the 2nd North Carolina Cavalry at Iredell Co., North Carolina, when he was age 21.  Unfortunately, the copyist who entered his information into the Carded Records at the National Archives got his age at enlistment wrong and entered "31" instead of "21."

William married Elizabeth Dobbins Jones abt. 1843, perhaps in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

William and Elizabeth Gill were on the 1850 census in McDowell Co., North Carolina. His married sister, Susan Holland, and brother Henry Gill were living nearby:

65th Regiment Volunteers-6th Cavalry was organized in August, 1863, by consolidating the 5th and 7th North Carolina Cavalry Battalions. These two units had rendered efficient services in East Tennessee and Kentucky. Many of the men were from Ashe, Burke, Watauga, Transylvania, and Mitchell counties. The regiment fought at Chickamauga, then with other troops in Dibrell's Brigade gave support to Longstreet at Knoxville. It was then assigned to the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia. Under this command it saw action at New Bern, near Kinston, and along the Roanoke River. It was organized with 520 men and during February, 1864, had 273 present for duty. Attached to Butler's Cavalry Division, the unit disbanded near Salisbury in April, 1865. The field officers were Colonel George N. Folk, Lieutenant Colonels Alfred H. Baird and Thaddeus P. Siler, and Major John J. Spann.

Caveat:  I have little faith in the precise accuracy of the birth and even death dates for some members of this family.  Likely birth years fluctuated widely from census to census and the date of death on Thomas Y. Gill's grave marker is roughly two years after the date of his obituary.

Thomas Young Gill was on the 1820-1850 censuses with his father:

Thomas Young Gill died 26 Jul 1899, in Iredell Co., North Carolina, and was buried in Snow Creek Methodist Church Cemetery, Iredell Co., North Carolina.

Obituary from the:  The  Landmark  July 28, 1899: "Mr. Thos Young Gill died Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his home in the western part of Statesville at the age of 87. The remains were taken to Snow Creek yesterday morning and buried there in the old graveyard. The deceased had lived in Statesville only a few years and being infirm was not known to many of our citizens. He was a quiet, unassuming man who held the respect of all who know him. His wife and five children, one son, Mr. W.H. Gill, of Olin and four daughters, Mrs. A.C. McHargue, and Misses Julia, Rebecca and Emma Gill, all of Statesville, survive him. The deceased was an uncle of Messrs. J.B. and T.A. Gill, of Statesville and a brother of Mr. H.L. Gill of Olin."

I have not been able to find Mary Tomlin Gill and her unmarried daughters on the 1900 census even though they probably were in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

Married daughter Fannie McHargue and son William Gill were both in Iredell Co., North Carolina, for the 1900 census:

Mary Melissa Tomlin died on 21 January 1905 in Olin, Iredell Co., North Carolina, at age 75.

Mary Tomlin Gill's obituary from the Landmark  on Jan. 24, 1905: "Mrs Mary Melissa Gill, nee Tomlin, raised in North Iredell, widow of the late Thomas Y. Gill, aged 68 or 69, died Saturday midnight at her home on the Taylorsville road, in Bloomfield, of paralysis. The funeral was conducted from Snow Creek Methodist church yesterday at 1 o'clock. Four daughters, Mrs A.C. McHargue, Misses Julia, Rebecca and Emma Gill of Statesville, and one son, Mr. Wm Gill, of Olin township survive."

Mary Tomlin Gill was buried with her husband Thomas Y. Gill in Snow Creek Cemetery, Iredell Co., North Carolina. They have a monument with Mary Gill's name on one side and Thomas Gill's name on the other.  Unfortunately the monument has the wrong date of death for Thomas  --  July 26, 1901, rather than July 26, 1899  --  and his year of birth is also questionable.

According to a biography of Son Ingram Gill Lawrence, he moved to Texas about 1870.  I have not been able to find him on the 1870 census.  Perhaps he was in transition from North Carolina to Texas when the census was taken, however, Ingram is said to have married Emma E. Hart on 25 July 1872 in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

Ingram and Emma Lawrence moved to Kaufman Co. Texas, where Emma Lawrence died on 13 Aug 1876, shortly after having given birth to the couple's third son Eugene. Eugene and son Robert died shortly after Emma.

Ingram Gill Lawrence married Mary Etta Bartlett before the 1880 census, probably in Kaufman Co., Texas.

In 1880, Sarah Lawrence was living close to her brother Thomas and her niece Mary Gill McHarge:

The following are  the biography and obituary of Ingram Gill Lawrence:

The Terrell Star, 24 December 1882,  Leading Men of Terrell. "I. G. Lawrence: The intellectual dome of the above gentleman will doubtless attract attention.  He was born on the eleventh day of March 1848, in Iredell County, North Carolina, where he has resided up to 1870.  He was educated at Davidson College, and was a member of the graduating class.  It is not generally known that Mr. Lawrence is a man of  letters, but such is the case.  When he first came to this State he taught school, after which he engaged in Mercantile pursuits.  All are familiar with his career as a merchant and his history since his residence in this county.  As a private citizen he is useful and as an elderman, representing the Third ward, he has ever been found an able and faithful representative .  Mr. Lawrence is the senior member of the popular firm of I. G. Lawrence." (Transcribed by Mary Achterhof.)

Dallas Weekly Herald, 10 May 1883: "Death of I. G. Lawrence: News was received here yesterday morning that Mr. I. G. Lawrence, a leading citizen and prominent business man of Terrell was dead. The telegram did not state the cause of death. The deceased was well and favorably known in business circles here, and his death was received with expressions of regret."

Ingram Gill Lawrence is buried in Elmo Cemetery, Elmo, Kaufman Co., Texas, with his first wife and three young sons.  The memorial stone lists:

The Landmark,Statesville, Iredell Co North Carolina

Correspondence of The Landmark

There was a reunion of the Allen Gill family in Olin Thursday, July 26th. The day was most pleasantly spent in a social way--a good dinner and such other incidentals as one would expect on such an occasion. There were regrets that more of the relatives from Statesville could not have been with us, but the recent rains and bad roads and sickness kept many away who would have been happy to be with us. Mr H L Gill, now in his 80th year, the only surviving member of the Allen Gill family, was with us and greatly enjoyed the day. Mrs Martha V Chapman, of McDowell county, and Mrs Kerr and Mr Joseph Holland, of Marion, near relatives of the Gill family, were with us. Mrs J A J Farrington and children, of Salisbury, were present and received a hearty welcome. There were a number of friends of the family present by invitation who greatly enjoyed themselves, none more so than the venerable J P Shoemaker, of Hopewell. such occasions are bright oases in life's journey.
