Descendants of Gabriel Gill

Generation No. 1

        1.  Gabriel2 Gill was born Abt. 1741, and died Abt. 1803 in Washington Co., VA.  He married Rebecca Pettit was born 24 Dec 1754 in York Co., PA (probably) and died Abt. 17 Mar 1807 in Washington Co., VA.

Notes for Gabriel Gill:

The Klechner shown in "Grever vs. Gill" is actually Adam Clackner who married Rebecca Gill (the daughter) in Baltimore MD 1798.  Throughout the court documents, this name is spelled Kleckner, Klackner, and Kelchner.  In all cases, this man and his wife are identified as "no inhabitant" of the County and/or State.  Further, in 1803, letters of Administration are issued to Adam Clackner for the Estate of Gabriel Gill in Baltimore MD.

Gabriel Gill died 1802 or 1803 in Washington Co., VA after moving there in around 1801 and buying property in 1802.  Clearly, Gabriel still had property in Maryland when he contracted to buy property in Washington Co., VA.  Since Thomas was still a minor, Adam Clackner was executor in Maryland and David Carter and Gabriel’s widow Rebecca were executors in VA.

Notes for Rebecca:

A Gabriel Gill had land surveyed in Reading Twp., York Co., PA  21 Jan 1774 along the Great Conewago Creek43.  This puts our Gabriel in position to meet and marry Rebecca Pettit from York Co., PA across the boarder from Baltimore, MD.   In the York Co., PA will of Thomas Pettit dated 12 Mar 1789 and proved 25 Aug 1790, we find daughter Rebecca wife of Gabriel Gill.

Children of Gabriel Gill and Rebecca are:

+      2                 i.    Thomas3 Gill, born Bet. 07 Jan 1785 - 1790 in Maryland (1900 Kansas census for Nehemiah); died Aft. 1850 in Probably: Scott Twp., Marion Co., OH.

Generation No. 2

        2.  Thomas3 Gill (Gabriel2,)1 was born Bet. 07 Jan 1785 - 1790 in Maryland, and died ca. 1850 in OH.  He married Grace Williams1 06 Jan 1814 in Washington Co, VA2,3,4,5, daughter of Nehemiah Williams and Mary McGill.  She was born 10 May 1798 in Washington Co., VA6, and died 16 Nov 1844 in Troy Twp., Delaware Co., OH.

Notes for Thomas Gill:

Augusta Co., Virgina Court records, "Grevor vs. Gill" identifies Gabriel and all the children

from: "History of Delaware County, Ohio" (Baskin 1880)

"Thomas Gill, a brother-in-law of Carter, came from Virginia in 1816. He settled on the farm now occupied by Cline, where he died."

"Thomas Gill was the first blacksmith, and as business did not warrant him in locating permanently, he used to shift his quarters as occasion required."

"The " Horseshoe " road was located about 1828, and lies east of the Olentangy. It opens up the Horseshoe bottoms. This road is what is known as a mud road, the pure significance of which can only be appreciated after a thaw in winter, or a hard rain in spring."

A Thomas Gill of Delaware Co., OH bought 80 acres in Marion Co., OH and title was transferred on 5/6/1835.  The legal description is E1/2NW1/4, Sec. 29, T4S, R16E, 1st PM. Marion Co., OH

In the 1850 census----87 yr old Blacksmith Thomas Gill (b: MD) and 30 yr old Blacksmith John Gill (b:OH) live with 4 "girl" Gills that fit the 1840 Census. I believe the age is a blow---all else fit

The 1900 census for Vicksburg Twp., Jewell Co., KS lists Nehemiah (s/o Thomas) as 77 years old and his father born in Maryland and his mother born in Virginia.  In the 1880 census his parents are shown as both born in Ohio.  This has to be in error, we need to start looking in Maryland.  Census record for Jon (1880?) show both parents born in Maryland.

Notes for David Carter:

from: "History of Delaware County, Ohio" (Baskin 1880)

"David Carter came about the year 1817. He was a stonemason by trade; and married a sister of Thomas Gill and through him was connected with the Mains. He settled, when he came to this locality, on the farm now occupied by Mr. Simpson. His unfortunate death caused profound sorrow in the community, and the circumstances attending it are remembered by many to the present day. In 1823, James Martin had invited his neighbors to help him put up a log barn. Carter was among the number, and while assisting to place a log in position, it slipped and striking him on the head, inflicted injuries from which he subsequently died. This accident cast a gloom over the settlement, and for some years afterward was wont to bring up sad memories at all similar gatherings."
