Benton Co., AL was renamed to Calhoun Co. sometime in the 1850s and contains the city of Anniston, Ft. McClellan and Redstone Arsenal.

Leonard Gill born 1780-1790 (from 1840 census)  died c1846 (1841?), married to Zenna, Zaner, Zaney, or perhaps Janey?, who was born c1804 in SC.  His widow, Zenna or Zaner married second to Samual Thompson.  Greg Nabors' information on this family.  Leonard Gill appears in a record in Lunenburg Co., VA.  This marriage record places Leonard Gill in Lunenburg Co., VA in 1821, and in SC in 1837, when Julia A. Gill was born.  He removed to Benton Co., AL c1838, and died in Benton Co., AL c1841.

My bets are that Zenna, Zaner, Zaney, or Janey born c1804 in SC was a second wife, and that she is not the mother of the first three.  She probably is the mother of Able, Julia A., James, and Isopheny only.

Known Children (census, 2 sons, 3 daughters in 1840):

  1. Daughter Gill born 1815-20
  2. Daughter Gill born 1815-20

  4. Able Gill born c1836 in SC.  Abel S. Gill, brother to Julia Gill, married Rebecca Neighbors born c1835 in Alabama, a sister to Thomas J. Neighbors, September 21, 1853 in Benton Co., AL. Abel and Rebecca Neighbors are mentioned in John Neighbors's will probated in Calhoun Co., AL in 1872.  Navarro County, Texas 1880 census: Able Gill, WM 45 (b c1835 SC) Farming father born in VA, mother born in SC.  Rebecca WF 45 (b1835 AL) fbAL mbAL.  Able Gill removed to Navarro County, Texas.
  5. Julia A. Gill born c1837 SC.  She was listed on the 1850 Benton Co., AL census, living with Abraham and Malinda Towns. Julia married Thomas J. Neighbors September 5, 1852 in Benton Co. but she is not listed on the 1860 Calhoun (formerly Benton) Co. census. They had at least one child, William E. Nabors, in 1868. She apparently died between 1868 and 1890. Thomas married Martha Prater in Calhoun Co. in 1890.  This is the line of Greg Nabors.  Please contact him with information.
  6. James Gill born c1840 AL, probably born after 1840 census.
  7. Isopheny Gill (male or female?) born c1846, 4 in 1850 census.
