In the reorganization of 1975 the county was divided among the districts of East Lothian, Midlothian, and West Lothian, City of Edinburgh of Lothian region, and Ettrick and Lauderdale district of Borders region. The former county of Midlothian was bounded on the north by the Firth of Forth and by the city of Edinburgh. Edinburgh itself was always administratively separate from the county.
