Florida

Florida was admitted in 1845 as the 27th state.  The state capital was Tallahassee.  Florida was "discovered" in 1513 by Ponce de Leon.  In 1565 the Spanish colonized Florida by driving out the French  and founding St. Augustine.  Florida was ceded to England in 1763, ceded back to Spain in 1783, and sold to the U.S. in 1819.  It became a territory with its present boundaries in 1822.  This is the year Thomas Gill removed from SC, crossed Georgia and wound up in Florida.  The Seminole Wars were fought in Florida.  It seceded from the Union in 1861.
