Josiah Henry Gill was born July 24, 1798, in Chester District, South Carolina,
the son of Abraham and Agnes (Walker) Gill. He married November 10, 1818,
probably in Chester District, South Carolina, Mary A. Bradford. She was born
c1799 in South Carolina, probably Chester District, the daughter of William
and Sarah (Wylie) Bradford.
Mary Bradford joined Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church in Chester District
in 1813. Josiah Gill joined this church in 1818, probably when he married.
Their first five children were baptized in this church. (Brent H. Holcomb
and Elmer O. Parker, Early Records of Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church
(Greenville, SC, 1980)).
Josiah Gill bought 69 acres of his deceased parents' estate on Rocky Creek
in Chester District in 1817 (Chester Co., SC, Deeds S:239). He bought an
additional 58 acres that same year and an additional 13.5 acres in 1825 (Chester
Co. Deeds S:240, V:242). Josiah and Mary Gill sold their homeplace of 166
acres in December 1832 (Chester Co. Deeds Z:106). Josiah H. Gill was named
Commissioner for the Poor in Chester Co., SC, 6 Jan1832 [Books of Miscellany,
SC Historical Commission, G:285]
The Gills then moved to Hall County, Georgia. He first bought land in Hall
County in January 1833 (Hall Co., GA, Deed Records D:63). Here they lived
near the town of Gillsville. Mary A. Bradford Gill died in Hall County, GA,
October 20, 1838.
Josiah H. Gill married secondly October 31, 1839 (Bible record) or November
12, 1839 (courthouse record A:1075) in Hall County, Georgia, Sarah R. Simmons.
Sallie Simmons was born in 1807 in North Carolina, the daughter of Richard
and Frances (Smith) Simmons.
Josiah and Sallie Gill moved to Floyd County, Georgia, about 1847 and settled
at Cave Spring. Here Sallie Gill died August 8, 1855, and is buried in Cave
Spring Cemetery. He was a trustee of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South,
at Cave Spring. After the Civil War, he helped reorganize a private Methodist
school at Cave Spring called Wesleyan Institute and served as the first
Josiah Gill was a farmer, a slave owner, and sometimes a merchant. Census
records record his slave holdings: 2 in 1820, 12 in 1830, 4 in 1840, 9 in
1850, 11 in 1860. About 1867 Josiah Gill moved to Homer, Louisiana, with
his three youngest sons and where his son William B. Gill had settled about
1853. He was in business with his son George G. Gill. Here he died October
10, 1878, and is buried in Old Homer Cemetery.
His will was signed 4 May 1874 and named William B. Gill and George G. Gill
as executors. Since his son W. B. Gill predeceased him, his heirs petitioned
that George G. Gill be the only executor. The heirs are also proved by his
estate settlement through a set of receipts from the heirs in 1879 and another
set in 1885-6 (Claiborne Par., LA, Succession Records, #392).
This record is based on the research of my grandfather Arthur Otts Ford in
the 1930s and 1940s and his 1947 printed history. Some birth and death dates
of the first two generations are recorded in a transcription of a Bible record,
formerly in the possession of Ida Otts Ford, now in the possession of Andrew
L. Leath, with the notation by A. O. Ford "evidently copied from J H Gill
