James Martin was b. c1790 (probably a son of Joseph Martin) in Richland District SC, d. 9 February 1851 in Lincoln Co MS. He married Mary Gill c.1811-1812 in SC.  I (FOC) believe she probably was a sister of the John Gill who removed to Mississippi, daughter of John Gill born c1754.  They migrated to Lawrence Co MS around 1817. He served in the SC Militia during the War of 1812.  They had 5 children. James Martin's age is calculated from the 1850 and 1860 Censuses of Lawrence Co MS.  James Martin and Mary Gill Martin are listed on both the 1818 and 1820 Census of Lawrence Co MS. The Federal Census shows her date of death as c1827-1829.  She died abt 1827, possibly as a result of having her last child, since the birthdate of their fifth child is c1827.

James Martin married second Alsa (Alsey) Gill (b. c1800 in SC according to 1850 Census of Lawrence Co MS) on 19 August 1830 in Lawrence Co MS. She died abt May/June 1892 according to Pensions Cancellation Records. According to my information she was married first to John Gill (Sr), 29 April 1824 in Lawrence Co MS.  James and Alsa (Gill) Martin had 4 children. They are listed on the 1830 Census of Lawrence Co MS. Some think he may have been married between these two wives, but I have found no evidence or indication of that.

Please contact P. Dixon with information on this line, especially the siblings of James Martin, and his parents.
