I've communicated with the Barbara Long regarding Myers . . .and my ancestor

Following from my family Bible records (I believe this family descends from John Gill and Leah Barney's children. All their children were born in Maryland and came to Ohio about 1840.

SELMON GILL was born 15 December 1790. He married MARGARET DORRETT on 19 December 1813 at the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Baltimore, Maryland, by the Reverend Beverly Waugh. She was born 06 October 1790, and died 11 September 1846.

Children of SELMON GILL and MARGARET DORRETT :

  1. HENRY HARRISON GILL was born 18 October 1814, died 27 February 1815.
  2. ELEANORAH GILL (MYERS) was born 19 December 1819, died May 1898.  Eleanorah "Nora" Gill, I'm unsure where the names "Hannah Ellen" came from, but they're incorrect - word of mouth.
  3. JOSHUA SELMON GILL was born 16 May 1819, died 09 March 1880.  Was a "bowl turner."
  4. MARGARET HENRIETTA GILL (SAMPLES) was born 22 October 1821, died 184?
  5. MARY ANN GILL was born 27 October 1823, died 30 March 1839.
  6. WILLIAM HENRY GILL was born 19 June 1826, died 1886.
  7. EDWIN S. GILL was born 05 October 1828, died 17 December 1907.
  8. AMANDA M. GILL was born 14 November 1830, died 01 March 1840.

I've been reading your document about Mary Tracey and all her Gill children, born "on the wrong side of the blanket." I thank you so much for this record. I had thought as I read the Will that there must have been children. I think going backwards into my family in Maryland may be more fascinating than I thought it might be.

With so many "Gill" families, mine is surely difficult to find, though I do believe that I've found them in this family of John Gill's. (I sure hope you've colour on your e-mail, as I'm going to try to colour code here.

My known list of Gill (from family bible records) begins thus:

SELMON GILL was born 15 December 1790. He married MARGARET DORRETT on 19 December 1813 at the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Baltimore, Maryland, by the Reverend Beverly Waugh. She was born 06 October 1790, and died 11 September 1846. (Their children were born in Maryland and at some point all moved to Union County, Ohio, where I believe Selmon was a farmer. I've managed to trace most of the children., though none known nearly as my own line from #3)

Children of SELMON GILL and MARGARET DORRETT :

  1. HENRY HARRISON GILL was born 18 October 1814, died 27 February 1815.
  2. ELEANORAH GILL (MYERS) was born 19 December 1819, died May 1898.
  3. JOSHUA SELMON GILL was born 16 May 1819, died 09 March 1880. (I descend from here)
  4. MARGARET HENRIETTA GILL (SAMPLES) was born 22 October 1821, died 184?
  5. MARY ANN GILL was born 27 October 1823, died 30 March 1839.
  6. WILLIAM HENRY GILL was born 19 June 1826, died 1886.
  7. EDWIN S. GILL was born 05 October 1828, died 17 December 1907.
  8. AMANDA M. GILL was born 14 November 1830, died 01 March 1840.
  9. ROSANNAH MATILDA GILL (BAILEY) was born 15 December 1833, died in 1890¹s.

It is John Gill in his 1810 will listing his daughters by their married surnames that gives me my first clue: Eleanor Selmon

Looking at the children of his father, John Gill (will dated 1793), a daughter is named with the surname of his wife, Mary Rogers. I show another John Gill marrying in 1780 Leah Barney, and the John Gill who dies in 1822 has named a daughter Leah Gill, so this must be the same John Gill, naming a daughter with the name of his wife?

So -- what on earth do I know? Beats me. I have found this listing of children:

John Gill 1709-1797 married Mary Rogers1712-1797, resided Baltimore, MD.

  1. Eliza.Rogers Gill 4 Mar. 1731 unmar
  2. Sarah Gill Jan. 1733 died 1744
  3. Eleanor Gill Jan. 1735 m John Pendell
  4. John Gill 2nd 1737-1822
  5. Wm. Gill 1739
  6. Stephen Gill 1741
  7. Edward Gill 1744-1818
  8. Nicholas Gill 1750-1796
  9. Sarah Gill 1747-1796
  10. Joshua Gill 1753-1853
  11. Elizabeth Rogers Gill1755->1797

Best I can imagine, my Selmon Gill is the son of one of the above Gill sons of John Gill and Mary Rogers?
