Notes for RACHEL GILL:
-
Rachel Gill Porter and Nancy Gill Jenkins were sisters and had a brother
William Gill for whom Gill Township was named as was also Gill Prairie. He
is the grandfather of James and Harry Gill. Thomas and Nancy Gill Jenkins
left Chester Co., So. Carolina in 1807 (or 1804). Their children were: Sarah,
Eliza, Catherine, William, Thaddeus, Martha, John, and Richard. They started
from their house and after being on their journey about two weeks the father
Thomas died. The mother located four miles southwest of Carlisle, Indiana.
The mother Nancy Gill Jenkins joined the Shakers and took her daughters with

from the Shaker Society which community bore an interesting part in the early
day history of this section of Indiana. Grandmother Jenkins and her daughters,
Sarah and Eliza, went to localing at Shakertown, Indiana. There Grandmother

the Shakers of Shakertown holding that position until incapacitated by old

Notes for JAMES GILL WHITE:
-
James paid to have a substitute fight in the Civil War. If a man was drafted
and did not want to go, he could pay $300 or provide a substitute.
-
A reunion of the descendants of James Gill White began before 1920. Beginning
with the 2nd reunion in 1920, a record of events and those attending is recorded
in a book. For many years, this was a two day affair held on Sunday and Monday
of Labor Day weekend. Relatives from Illinois stayed overnight. As many as
100 would attend. It later became only a Sunday afternoon affair. For many
years, this was held on a portion of the old White farm. In the 70s, it was
moved to the home of Norman and Anna Jane Libbert (daughter of Harry White).
In 1983 (upon the sale of the Libbert Home), it was moved to Deming Park,
Terre Haute, Indiana. By this time, only 15 to 20 would attend - the descendants
of Agnes White Modesitt, Harry White, and Mary White Newton. By 1995, the
reunions had stopped.
Notes for EMMA ELLEN WOOD:
-
Emma's mother died of milk sickness when Emma was a baby. Her stepmother
was a sister of James Gill White - therefore he was her stepuncle and she
called him Uncle Jim before he became her husband. She was studying to be
a teacher at Mattoon at the time of her marriage. She was reported to be
a very beautiful woman. Emma's father was a spectulator on the markets, and
he had lost heavily. In fact, all he had left was his horse. He had borrowed
from James Gill White and owed him a lot of money. James said that he would
forgive him all of his debts if he could have "Em" for his wife. James was
a widower with young sons and was 26 years older than Emma. She quit her
teacher training and came home to marry him. Emma was always called Em.
