of Georgia (County unknown) removed to Lawrence Co., MS
Robert Gill born about l805 in GA married Nancy Cowart who was born about l8l5 in Georgia (info from Census). They married 20 Aug 1829 in Lawrence Co MS. Robert and Nancy Gill were in the l850 Lawrence Co ., MS Census, and land records in Lawrence Co . show where they sold land in l851. Nancy's father was Zachariah Cowart b: abt l787 in SC he married Sarah Wardell - Zachariah's parents were Needham Sr. and Phoebe Blount.
At this time, the records indicate a clear preferred possibility for this man's father, and I have placed the other possibilities in a linked file. Surely there are others, and we will examine them all as we learn more.
This Robert Gill is probably a son of James Gill who was in Bulloch County, GA in 1811 and removed to Mississippi. The Robert Gill, who removed with James Gill and Thomas Gill, had no children in 1811, nor in Mississippi. (as listed in the census) The Mississippi census data show that Thomas Gill (of these three) had no sons under the age of 21 in 1816, so Robert Gill could only be a son of James Gill, who did have sons under the age of 21. I think this James Gill is the father of Robert Gill born c1805 in Georgia. I think this James Gill is probably the same as Mr. Cupit's James Gill, #2.
I think this family is of the Richland Co., SC set, and therefore descended from old James Gill somehow. There seems to be a connection with the Loyalists in our family. Perhaps his name recalls the Robert Gill born <1763, Loyalist. As we learn more, and set other constraints, we may develop better working hypotheses.
However, these Lawrence County, MS Gills were definitely from the Richland Co., SC set of Gills. The elder Reuben Gill is clearly the same Reuben Gill who first shows up in Richland Co., SC papers, then Clarke Co., AL, then Lawrence Co., MS. John Bryan Hart was from Richland Co., as were the Fausts who moved with the Gills, and several other families.
Does anyone have evidence to clarify and document this man's parents?
