Erasmus Gill Captain from VA under George Washington (VA Military Records F225.v884, 1983 p404). Erasmus Gill, Captain, served in Virginia Cavalry 7 years, ending Sept. 1782 (Mrs. Clark p63). "If Ras Gill will come here I will procure him a commission immediately, or any other clever young gentleman" (excerpt from letter written by Col. George Johnston, aide de camp to General Washington, bearing date, "Headquarters Morristown, 17th march 1777, St. Paddy's Day." (Tyler's Quart. Mag. XII 115 (Mrs. Clark p84)). Erasmus Gill Capt. one of original men of Va Society of the Cincinnati (VA Military Records F225.v884, 1983 p900)(also Mrs. Clark p63). Erasmus Gill married Sarah Newsum 14 June 1786, Dinwiddie Co., VA {in modern handwriting: "Martha the wife of John Verell was the sister of Sarah Newsum who married Capt. Erasmus Gill of Dinwiddie Co., and the Peter Jones referred to was the Uncle of both Mrs. Verell and Mrs. Gill and divided his estate between them. He was the son of Abraham Jones by his wife Sarah (Ravenscroft) and Abraham Jones was the son of Major Peter Jones who married a dau. of Maj. Genl. Abram Wood about the years 1675-6 (D.A.H.) Dinwiddie Co., Records (Mrs. Clark p63&64). Erasmus Gill and Sarah, his wife, have dau. Lucy Jones born 7 Sept. 1792, bp. 23 Sept. Bristol Par., Dinwiddie Co.. VA. She was buried same date as baptism (Mrs. Clark p64). Erasmus Gill has numerous slaves baptized 1792 Bristol Parish, Dinwiddie Co., VA (Mrs. Clark p64).
