William Gill born about 1777 in Lunenburg Co., Virginia,  died 6 September 1858 in Meriwether Co. Georgia.

Judging from the birth years of his children, William  married by about 1804, perhaps in North Carolina.  It is possible the first wife was a Woodward because William had ongoing connections with the Woodward family in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

According to family history, William had a second marriage to Rhoda Poole on 12 Aug. 1813 in Morgan Co., Georgia.  Rhoda was born about 1797 in either South Carolina or Georgia, and died between the 1860 and 1870 censuses in Meriwether Co., Georgia.

My note:  William was married to Rhoda on the 1850 census.  I have not been able to confirm her last name or the date and place of the marriage.  The date looks about right, but I believe the marriage took place in Wilkes Co., Georgia, because that's where William Gill was from about 1812 until 1834.  For what it is worth, William Gill acquired land in Wilkes Co., Georgia,  adjacent to land owned by William Pool.  Perhaps William Pool was related to Rhoda  --  assuming she was a Poole.

The children of William Gill and his first wife

  1.  Carolyn L./S. Gill  b. abt. 1805 in Georgia, d. between the 1860 and 1870 censuses,  probably in Coweta Co., Georgia.  She married  Norman Bradley about 1825, probably in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

  2.  Mary C./E. Gill b. abt. 1807 in Georgia, d. probably bet. August 11, 1858, and the 1860 census.  She married John H. Howard abt. 1827 probably in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

  3.  Henry A. Gill  b. abt. 1811/1813 in Wilkes Co., Georgia,  d. after August 11, 1858.  He married Martha Repass on 3 March 1836 in Meriwether Co., Georgia.  [Note: It is possible that Henry died after the 1880 census in Bradley Co., Arkansas.  Henry was single in the 1850 census.  Henry (A. or M.) Gill bc1816 p330 1850 census Meriweather Co., GA farmer age 34 with #364 Clement Davis, 36 farmer, net worth $0.   A HENRY A. GILL, census records 1870 Bradley Co., AR, with wife MARTHA, and children. He and wife and children all born in GA. On the AR census for Henry and Martha there is abt. a 10 year gap in the ages of the last children like age 11 and age 1.  Martha may be a second wife. Henry A. Gill is listed in the 1850 census GA as single living in house of a sister. This Henry A. Gill of AR (Bradley Co.) had a child b. 1848, then the last child on census b. 1869 age 1. Seems as though this Henry A. Gill of AR wasn't with his family for about a decade. The child in 1848 b. GA, the child age l b. AR. I believe this data fits Henry A. Gill, son of Wm Gill of Montgomery Co. His age also fits, b. 1813.  Juliet Wills ]

  4.  Thomas Young Gill  b. 16 March 1813 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. April 1880 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, at age 66.  According to family history, Thomas Young Gill married 1st to Mary Ann Pullen on 21 June 1833 in Wilkes Co., Georgia.  He married second to Martha Jane Pullen on 15 January 1849, in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

The children of William Gill and Rhoda Poole:

  5.  Hiram Milledge Gill  b. abt. 1815 in Wilkes Co., Georgia,  d. between 1875/1876 and the 1880 census in Coweta or Carroll Co., Georgia.  He married Louisa J.  abt. 1852 in Georgia. He was named for Governor Milledge of Ga. An old capital of Ga. was at Milledgeville. I (Charles McDaniel) have found primary sources which call him just "Milledge Gill."  He was my wife's gg grandfather and senior members of the family now deceased could only tell us his name was Milledge.  He was a member of Phillips Legion, Cavalry, in the Civil War.

    1. William A. Gill 1855-1900 marr. Nancy E. Powell, married 2nd Permelia Hinseley.
    2. Martin Victory Gill bor 1858
    3. James B.F. Gill born 1860
    4. Hiram F. Gill born 1862
    5. Eles Gill born 1864
    6. Joseph Gill born 1871
    7. Janie M. Gill born 1876
  6.  Fielding L.(Lewis?) Gill  b. 1820,  in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. 1884 Upshur Co., Texas.  He married Rebecca Lawson abt. 1845.  Migrated to Texas, Upshur Co. by abt 1870. It is unfortunate that the will only has initials "F. L.", but not too many names will fit the letters.  I also believe that F.L. Gill, son of Wm. Gill of Montgomery Co. GA, was this Fielding Lewis Gill of Upshur Co. TX, 1880 census. This Fielding Lewis Gill family had connections to southern AR, that is why I looked at the AR census and found Henry A. Gill. This family of Wm Gill of GA is difficult to document. My Fielding L. Gill married into my Donaldson family of NC that migrated into MS then into TX.   Juliet Wills

  7.  Rebecca Elvira Gill b. abt 1820 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. before 14 Oct 1855 in Coweta Co., Georgia.  She married Edward Ragland on 17 Oct. 1839 in Meriwether Co., Georgia. Edward had a second marriage to Elizabeth Hallman on 14 Oct 1855, in Coweta Co., Georgia

  8.  Susan Ann (Susannah) Gill  b. 1820-1825 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. between the 1880 and 1900 censuses, probably in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina. She married Thomas L.C. Donalson on 23 Dec 1836 in Meriwether Co., Georgia.

  9.  Nancy Gill born 1823 Wilkes Co., Georgia, d.  1861 in Talapoosa Co., Alabama.  She married  Clement Dean Davis, Sr., on  28 Nov. 1839 in Meriwether Co., Georgia.  Nancy was the second of Clement's three wives.

  10.  Andrew J. Gill  b. abt 1825/8 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. between 1862 and the 1870 censuses, probably in Meriwether Co., Georgia  --  no evidence of Civil War service.  He married Mary Ann Perkinson/Pergerson  on 12 Nov. 1851 in Meriwether Co., Georgia.  probably Andrew "T." Gill in 1850 census in Coweta Co. in house of Edward Rageland (who married his sister).

  11.  Julia Ann Gill b. 1827/1828 in Wilkes Co. Georgia,  d. between the 1880 and 1900 censuses, probably in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina.   She married Stanhope Lafayette Donalson/Donaldson  on 13 Nov. 1851 in Meriwether Co., Georgia.

  12.  Olvin H. Gill  b. 1829 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. after the 1910 Census, probably in Meriwether Co., Georgia.  He married Mary Ann Watson, born 1830 in GA, father born in Ireland, mother born in GA,  on 22 June 1856 in Meriwether Co., Georgia.  Oliver H. Gill, Oliver "Olvin" Hunt Gill born 1829 in GA, both parents born in NC, married 22 Jun. 1856 in Meriwether Co., GA. Both alive in 1880 Meriwether Co. GA census.

    1. William Gill born c1858 GA (1860 census, not present in 1880 census)
    2. Robert Gill born c1862 GA (1880 census)
    3. John Thomas Gill born 1864 GA (1880 census)
    4. Ellizabeth L. "Lizzie" Gill born 1869 in GA married 1884 James Walter Plant born 1861 GA.
    5. Jimmie Gill born 1871 GA (1880 census)
  13.  John A. Gill b. 1831/1832 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d.  after the 1880 census, probably in Meriwether Co., Georgia.  He married  Nancy Jane Perkerson, born c1834, in 1860 Meriwether Co., GA census,  on 26 Dec. 1858 in Meriwether Co., Georgia.  A John A. Gill was killed in the Civil War. I He was in the 1850 census.

William Gill  moved to Georgia, perhaps as early as 1804.  His brother Thomas Young Gill joined him in Wilkes Co., Georgia, by about 1812.  William was on the militia list and court records in Wilkes by 1812:

The Early Records of Georgia, Volume I, Wilkes County, abstracted and compiled by Grace Gillam Davidson, published in 1933 at Macon, GA:

page 320: "Officers of Col. Thos. Wootten's Regt. [among others] Gill, William as Capt. 180th, Dist. Co. of Militia Jul. 9, 1812."

page 183: "Page 33--Nov. 2, 1812.. Sarah and Elizabeth Woodward, orphans of Henry Woodward, dec'd., choose William Gill guardian."

page 307: "Woodward, Sarah & Elizabeth, orphs of Henry Woodward, dec'd. Wm. Gill app gdn Nov. 2, 1812."

In 1813, William Gill was a witness in a Wilkes Co. criminal case, State vs. James Carter. (The Wilkes County Papers, 1773-1833, Robert Scott Davis, Jr., Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1979,  p176.)

According to family history,  William married Rhoda Poole on 12 Aug. 1813 in Morgan Co., Georgia.  Although the date seems about right, I doubt that the marriage actually occurred in Morgan Co.  Records place William Gill in Wilkes Co. from 1812 to 1834.  He was a recent widower in 1813 with a number of young children, including an infant.  It is unlikely he would have travelled several counties away to court and then marry a new wife.  He probably would have married a woman closer to home, likely the daughter or sister of a neighbor.

If Rhoda was a Poole, she probably was related to William and Stovall Poole, who were neighbors to William Gill on the 1820 census in Wilkes Co., Georgia.  I believe William and Stovall Poole were the sons of Dudley Poole and his first wife.  William Poole was appointed to administer Dudley Poole's 1826 will.  Unfortunately, the will did not name Dudley's  children.  It only mentioned his widow, a step-daughter and two grandchildren by name:

The Early Records of Georgia, Volume II, Wilkes County, page 148: Page 191--POOL, DUDLEY. To wife Elizabeth plantation whereon I now live, final division to legal heirs. To Judith Hide bed etc, $350.00 which Wm. Pool owes me, he to be guardian of Judith Hide. To grandchildren John S., Wm. J., and Alfred C. Pool, my four draws in the approaching Land Lottery. No Excr. named. Signed Feb. 17, 1826. Probated May 1, 1826. Sanford Pullin, Thos. Reeves, Simpson McLendon, Test.

The Early Records of Georgia, Volume I, Wilkes County, page 218: Page 81--May 1, 1826. William Poole appointed Admr. with will annexed of Dudley Poole, dec'd.

If Rhoda was Dudley Poole's daughter, her mother was his second wife Catherine (Katherine) Dunaway.  They married on 5 June 1790/1792 in Bedford Co., Virginia.

William was listed on an additional bounty land grant in 1822.  This land was next to the land of William Pool, perhaps a relative to William Gill's wife Rhoda  --  assuming she was a Poole.

In May 1822, William Gill was one of three persons sued by Jeremiah Burdine for debt, in the inferior court of Wilkes Co., Book E fo. 163. (The Wilkes County Papers, 1773-1833, Robert Scott Davis, Jr., Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1979, p 206.)

Brothers William and Thomas Gill were on the 1830 census in Wilkes Co. Georgia.  William's son-in-law John Howard was living nearby.  Caveat: The ages for William and Rhoda seem to be off by one age category.

About 1834, William and his brother Thomas Young Gill moved across the state to Meriwether Co., Georgia.  William's son-in-law John H. Howard went along.  William's daughter Caroline and her husband Norman Bradley had been in neighboring Coweta Co. for the 1830 census:

As far as I can tell, the only child of William Gill who did not make the move was son Thomas Young Gill who remained in Wilkes Co. for the rest of his life.

Son Fielding L. Gill married Rebecca Lawson about 1844/1845, place unknown.

William and Rhoda were on the 1850 census living one household away from their married daughter Nancy Davis.  The 4 year-old Virginia in the Gill household, was probably their granddaughter Virginia Davis who was not on the 1850 census with her parents, but was age 14 on the 1860 census with them in Alabama:

William Gill wrote a will on August 11, 1858, in  Meriwether Co., Georgia.  The will is recorded in Meriwether Co., Georgia, Will Book A, pages 431, 432.  [Note on the will:  I have not seen the original and did not do the following transcription.  Based on my research, I suspect whoever transcribed the will made mistakes on the middle initials of daughters Mary, Rebecca, and Caroline, and that the "Olive" mentioned in the will probably was Olvin.]

The Will of William Gill

In the name of God, Amen. I William Gill of said State and County, being of advanced age and knowing that I must shortly depart from this world deem right and proper both as respects myself and family that I should make a disposition of the property which a kind providence has blessed me. I therefore make this my last will and testament.

Item first: I desire and direct that my body be buried in a decent and Christianlike manner suitable to my circumstances and condition.

Item second: I desire and direct that all my just debts be paid without delay by my Executors hereinafter named as I am unwilling my creditors should be delayed of their rights especially as there is no necessity for delay.

Item third: I give and devise unto my beloved wife Rhoda with whom I have lived in the strictest quiet and love for many years, Sixty acres of land more or less it being the south part of Lot No. (124) One Hundred and twenty four in the tenth district of Meriwether County together with all other property or effects belonging to me or in my name, to have full power to use and control in any manner she may see fit and proper for her benefit and support during her natural life. And after the death of my wife Rhoda, it is my will that said estate or effects be equally distributed between eight of my children, to wit, Caroline S. Bradly, wife of Norman Bradly, Susan H. Donalson, wife of Thomas Donalson, Julia Donalson, wife of L. S. Donalson, F. L. Gill, Olive H. Gill, John A. Gill, Nancy Davis, wife of Clement Davis, Andrew J. Gill and Rebecca L. Ragland, wife of Edward Ragland.

Item fourth: It is my will that Henry A. Gill, Mary E. Howard, wife of John H. Howard, Thomas Y. Gill and Hiram M. Gill have one dollar each as their distribution share of my estate.

Item fifth: I constitute and appoint my beloved wife Rhoda executrix and beloved sons Andrew J. Gill, Olive H. Gill and John A. Gill Executors to this last will and testament this August 11, 1858.

William Gill

Signed, sealed and declared and published by William Gill as his last will and testament in the presence of us the subscribers who subscribed our names hereto in the presence of said Testators at his special instance and request and of each other. This August 11, 1858

Rhoda Gill was not on the 1870 census.  I assume she died before 1870, probably in Meriwether Co., Georgia.

The children of William Gill:

            1. Carolyn L./S. Gill  b. abt. 1805 in Georgia, d. between the 1860 and 1870 censuses,  probably in Coweta Co., Georgia.  She married  Norman Bradley about 1825, probably in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

The children of Norman Bradley and Caroline Gill:

a.   Daughter Bradley b. 1825-1830 in Wilkes or Coweta Co., Georgia, d. or married before 1840.

b.   Joseph W.Bradley b. abt.  1833 in Coweta Co., Georgia, d. bef. the 1900 census, in Coweta Co., Georgia.  He married Hellen about 1858, probably in Coweta Co., Georgia.

Caroline was on the 1820 census with her father:

Caroline married  Norman Bradley about 1825, probably in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

Norman and Caroline were on the 1830 census in Coweta Co., Georgia, with a daughter in their household:

Daughter Susan Amanda Howard married Green W. Mashburn on 26 Aug 1859 in Meriwether Co., Georgia.  This may have been a "shot-gun" wedding because they had a 5 month-old son counted in June for the 1860 census:

According to family history, daughter Susan Amanda's husband, Green Mashman/Mashburn, abandoned her and their infant son James and took off.  This seems to fit with the 1860 census showing 16 year-old Amanda Mashman living with her brother William Howard and her son James next door in his grandfather John Howard's household.

Mary Gill Howard was not counted on the 1860 census.  I assume she died between August 1858, when her father listed her in his will, and June 1860, but this may not be accurate because William's will mentioned another daughter, Rebecca Ragland, who had died in 1854 or 1855  --  before he wrote his will.

Son William A. Howard was living next to John Howard on the 1860 census in Meriwether Co., Georgia. His sister Susan Amanda Mashman was in his household.  Her son James was next door with grandfather John Howard:

13th Regiment, Georgia Infantry: 13th Infantry Regiment [also called Bartow Light Infantry] completed its organization in June, 1861, at Griffin, Georgia. Its members were recruited in the counties of Pike, Randolph, Early, Muscogee, Meriwether, Fayette, and Troup. This regiment first served in Western Virginia, then in December was ordered to Charleston, South Carolina, where it reported to General R.E. Lee. During the spring it fought at Whitemarch Island and soon moved back to Virginia. Brigaded under Generals Lawton, John B. Gordon, and C.A. Evans, it served with the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor. The regiment was then involved in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the Appomattox Campaign. The unit lost 9 killed and 19 wounded at Second Manassas, had 48 killed and 166 wounded at Sharpsburg, and sustained 13 casualties at Second Winchester. Of the 312 engaged at Gettysburg, more than forty percent were disabled. It surrendered 12 officers and 161 men. The field officers were Colonel John H. Baker, Marcellus Douglass, Walton Ector, and James M. Smith; Lieutenant Colonels S.W. Jones and Richard Maltbie; and Majors James A. Long and John L. Moore.

I have not found John and Caroline Brown on the 1880 census or 1900 census.

William A. Howard was apparently in Carroll Co., Georgia, around 1880 because several of his children married in Carroll Co. in the 1880's:

William A. Howard was in Cullman Co., Alabama, for the 1900 census.  A number of his children were also in Cullman Co., Alabama, for that census and two sons, Obediah W. and James, are buried in Duck River Cemetery, Cullman, Cullman Co., Alabama:

I have not been able to find any of William A. Howard's siblings on the 1900 census and assume they died before 1900, probably in Georgia.  William A. Howard died before the 1910 census  --  1901 according to family sources.

Note on John H. Howard and Mary Gill:  Many online family trees show John H. Howard married to Mary Connor/Conner.  I don't know where this mistaken information came from, but someone has apparently confused our John H. Howard with John Howard in Screven Co., Georgia, who did marry Mary Conner in 1833:

Henry is a bit of a puzzle.  Normally, I would have assume that Martha Repass Gill and the children had died before the 1850 census and that Henry was a widower living with his parents in 1850, but Henry A. Gill and wife Martha appeared on the 1860 census in Bradley Co., Arkansas.   In 1860, they had three sons in their household with a big gap between the 2nd and 3rd child, but by the 1870 census, Henry and Martha had reacquired 3 daughters, Sarah, Caroline and Martha Ann  --  all born in Georgia in the 1850's.  In addition, three other daughters, Susan, Mary Jane and Nancy, had married in Arkansas before the 1870 census.  I don't know where the 6 daughters were for the 1860 census.  Census takers did sometimes miss a child or two, but it is hard to imagine even an incompetent census taker missing six.

In 1862, son William O. Gill enlisted in Company B of Crawford’s Arkansas Infantry Battalion, as a private.   He was captured 11 Jan 1863 at the Battle of Arkansas Post, Arkansas, and sent to at Camp Douglas, Illinois, where he died of pneumonia 28 Jan 1863. (NARA M317, Record Group:109, State: Arkansas, accessed on Footnote.com.)  William is buried in a mass grave at Oakwood Cemetery, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.  He is listed on the cemetery memorial as "W.O. Gill,  B Crawford's Ark. Batt'n. "   <http://graveyards.com/IL/Cook/oakwoods/confederate-names/>

Daughter Nancy Gill married William J. Furlow about 1862/1863 probably in Bradley Co.,  Arkansas.

William Furlow served during the Civil War in Company A, Wright’s 12th Arkansas Cavalry, CSA, and Company A, Hardy's Arkansas Infantry, CSA. He shows up on records in both regiments and some of his records list service in both regiments:

Wright’s 12th Arkansas Cavalry, CSA.

http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/wright-a.html
Company A.

This company enlisted at Camden, Arkansas, on December 10, 1863, comprised mostly of men from Bradley County, Arkansas.  There is one extant muster roll for Company A, covering the period January 1 to February 29, 1864, when the company was stationed at Cut Off, Drew County, Arkansas.  The following endorsement accompanied the muster roll:  “My Company was organized at Camden, Arkansas, on the 10th day of Dec. 1863, and have been in the direction of the Arkansas river ever since.  /s/ JNO. T. KIRK, Capt. Comdg. Co.”

Furlow, William J
Third Sergeant—Enlisted in Co. A, 12th Arkansas Cavalry, at Camden, Arkansas, December 10, 1863; present, February 29, 1864; took oath of allegiance at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, April 20, 1864 [listed his address as Mount Vernon, Arkansas]; born c1840; filed Federal land patent in Cleveland county in 1861.

My note on the above:  I have reviewed the Civil War service records online at Footnote.com.  According to his oath of allegiance,  he was 24 years old in April 1864, 5' 81/2" tall, with black hair, grey eyes and a fair complexion.  He lived in Bradley Co., Arkansas.

I have not been able to find Henry and/or Martha Gill on the 1880 census.  I assume both were dead.  Unmarried Son George Gill was living with his married sister Susan Rice.  Susan and Lafayette Rice also had custody of the orphaned Furlow children and had a Boyette niece living with them:

[Note: The following census page is very hard to read and the names Boyet and Furlow have been mistranscribed on the LDS and HeritageQuest sites.]

            4. Thomas Young Gill  b. 16 March 1813 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. April 1880 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, at age 66.  According to family history, Thomas Young Gill married 1st to Mary Ann Matilda Pullen on 21 June 1833 in Wilkes Co., Georgia.  He married second to Martha Jane Pullen on 15 January 1849, in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

Children of Thomas Young and Mary Ann Pullen:

a.   Caroline E. Gill b. abt. 31  March 1834 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. 24 March 1858 in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

b.   John T./Y.  Gill b. 5 June 1836 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. 23 February 1853 in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

c.   Mary Ann Frances Gill b. April 1 1838 Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. 29 Jan 1917 Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Arkansas, buried Oakland cemetery, Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Arkansas. She married William Anders on 16 Dec 1855 in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

d.   William  John Gill  b. 11 November 1839  Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. 19 January 1918,  Shelby Co., Texas.  He is buried in Blair Cemetery near Timpson,  Shelby Co., Texas.  William  married Lizzie E. Rhodes on 9 Nov 1865, Wilkes Co., Georgia.

e.   Micajah  Anderson Gill b. 19 June1841,  Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. 6 November, 1919, in Wilkes Co., Georgia, buried Beulah Baptist Church, Tignall, Wilkes Co., Georgia.   He married Martha J. Rhodes on  01 Oct 1865,  Wilkes Co., Georgia.

f.   Julia R. Gill b. 9 Dec 1841/1843 Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. 1922, probably in Wilkes Co., Georgia, buried in Beulah Baptist Church, Tignall, Wilkes Co., Georgia. She married Noah Hinton on 18 Dec 1866,  in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

g.   Isaac M. Gill b. Jan 1842/1844 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. after the  1920 census, probably in Lincoln Co., Georgia.  He married Mary Harper on 10 Jan 1867 in  Lincoln Co., Georgia.

h.   George M. Gill b. 03April1850,  Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. 1 April 1904 probably in Lincoln Co., Georgia, buried in Beulah Baptist Church, Tignall, Wilkes Co., Georgia. He married Martha "Mattie" L. Harper on  01 Nov 1877, in Lincoln Co., Georgia.

Children of Thomas Young and Martha  J. Pullen:

i.   Susan A. Gill b. abt. 1852 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. after the 1880 census.  She married R. W. Hinton on 08 Jan 1868 in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

j.   Martha G. Gill b. abt. 1856/1857 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. between the 1860 and 1870 censuses.

k.   Rhoda Ann (Elizabeth)  "Lizzie" Gill b. 18 March 1859 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. Nov. 14, 1938 in Shelby Co., Texas. She married Benjamin F. Rhodes on  9 Oct 1879, in Wilkes Co., Georgia.  They are both buried in Buena Vista Cemetery, Timpson, Shelby Co., Texas.

I believe Thomas Y. Gill was the son of William Gill and William's first wife and probably was an infant when William Gill married Rhoda Poole on 12 Aug. 1813.

Thomas Y. Gill was on the 1820 and 1830 censuses with his father:

Thomas Young Gill married Mary Ann Matilda Pullen on 21 June 1833 in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

Thomas did not move to Meriwether Co., Georgia, with his father in 1834.  I assume Thomas was on the 1840 census in Wilkes Co., Georgia, but I haven't looked.

Mary Ann Pullen Gill died, probably shortly after son George was born.  Thomas married second to Martha Jane Pullen on 15 January 1849, in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

15th Regiment, Georgia Infantry: 15th Infantry Regiment, organized in the spring of 1861 at Athens, Georgia, contained men from Hancock, Stephens, Elbert, Lamar, Warren, Wilkes, Taliaferro, and Oglethorpe counties. On July 22, 1861, the unit was reported to be en route to Virginia and upon its arrival was assigned to the Potomac District. Later it was placed in General Toombs' and Benning's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The 15th was involved in the campaigns of the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, except when it was detached with Longstreet at Suffolk, Chickamauga, and Knoxville. It continued the fight in the Petersburg siege north of the James River and later around Appomattox. The regiment totalled 441 men in April, 1862, and lost 108 during Seven Days' Battles. It sustained 54 casualties at Second Manassas, 36 during the Maryland Campaign, and forty percent of the 368 engaged at Gettysburg. From April 14, to May 6, there were 73 disabled, and from August 1 to December 31, 1864, it lost 50 killed and wounded. At the surrender, 20 officers and 226 men were present. The field officers were Colonels Dudley M. DuBose, William M. McIntosh, William T. Millican, and Thomas W. Thomas; Lieutenant Colonels Stephen Z. Hearnsberger, Peter J. Shannon, T.J. Smith, and Linton Stephens; and Major Joseph T. Smith.

From the Washington Gazette on July 27, 1887,  transcribed by Keith Giddeon: The Great Re-Union: The Delhi Rangers After Twenty-Two Years.   One of the Largest Crowds Ever Seen about here at a Re-Union of the Old Soldiers

                                             -----

The re-union of the renowned Delhi Rangers [Company A, 15th Georgia Volunteer Infantry from Wilkes County, Georgia] at Beulah church, just beyond the Lincoln [County] line on last Thursday [July 21, 1887], was successful beyond all expectations. The old soldiers and all present had a most enjoyable day.

The following book contains a short biography of Micajah Anderson Gill submitted by a descendent, Dorthey Perry Gill.  Among other things, it lists his children.  I assume it is mostly accurate, however it does list the wrong mother for Micajah.  United Daughters of the Confederacy patriot ancestor album, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Paducah, Kentucky, Turner, 1999, page 94.   The biography page was online at: <http://books.google.com/books?id=Xce0t-x0nogC&printsec=frontcover&dq=United+Daughters+of+the+Confederacy&hl=en&ei=xNo6Te2EIIa8lQeV1fyNBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCwQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22micajah%20anderson%20gill%22&f=false>

Phillips' Legion, Georgia:  Phillips' Legion was organized prior to June, 1861, with a cavalry and infantry battalion. However, the legion did not serve as one command.

The cavalry battalion recruited its men in Coweta, Cherokee, Bibb, and Richmond counties. It contained six companies until June, 1864, when one company was transferred to Cobb's Cavalry Legion and the 4th Alabama Cavalry Battalion was assigned to the command. Its strength was now 463 officers and men. For a time the unit served in Georgia and along the South Carolina coast, then it moved to Virginia where it served under Generals Hampton, Butler, and P.M.B. Young. It participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Fredericksburg to Cold Harbor, then shared in the defense of Petersburg. Later it served in T.M. Logan's Brigade, was active in the campaign of the Carolinas, and surrendered with less than 50 men in April, 1865. Its commanders were Lieutenant Colonel William W. Rich, and Majors William B.C. Puckett and John B. Wilcoxon.

The infantry battalion included men from Whitfield, Polk, and Habersham counties. There were fifteen companies when the unit was originally organized. However, during the war these companies were consolidated and by mid-1863, only nine remained. It was ordered to Western Virginia and assigned to the Army of Kanawha, then moved to South Carolina. Later it returned to Virginia and served in General Dayton's, T.R.R. Cobb's, Wofford's, and DuBose's Brigade. In November, 1862, only 101 men were fit for duty. The battalion was active from Second Manassas to Gettysburg, moved with Longstreet to Georgia, but did not fight at Chickamauga. It was involved in the Knoxville Campaign, the battles of The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, Early's operations in the Shenandoah Valley, and various conflicts around Appomattox. The unit took 273 effectives to Gettysburg, had many captured at Sayler's Creek, and surrendered with 5 officers and 88 men. The field commanders were Colonel William Phillips; Lieutenant Colonels E. Sandy Barclay, Robert T. Cook, Joseph Hamilton, and Seaborn Johns, Jr.; and Major John S. Norris.

Hiram and Louisa were on the 1870 census in Coweta Co., Georgia:

I do not know whether Susan Gill and Thomas Donaldson had children or not.

In the late 1840's Thomas and Susan Gill Donaldson moved to Alabama along with Thomas Donaldson's younger brother Stanhope Lafayette Donaldson.  I assume they also made the move with Susan's younger brother Fielding L. Gill because, the Donaldsons were in Macon Co., Alabama, for the 1850 census and Fielding Gill was in neighboring Tallapoosa Co., Alabama, for the same census:

Fielding L. Gill was probably born shortly after the 1820 census.  He wasn't in the household for the 1820 census, but was on the 1830 and 1840 censuses with his likely birth year 1820.  This fits with the 1850 census listing him at age 30.

Fielding married Rebecca Lawson about 1845.  Her maiden name comes from the death certificate of their daughter Eugenia (see below).  Rebecca was born in Georgia, so it is possible Fielding and Rebecca were married in Georgia and moved to Alabama shortly after their marriage.

Fielding and Rebecca were on the 1850 census in Tallapoosa Co., Alabama, with two young sons, both born in Alabama:

About 1851, Fielding and Rebecca were joined in Tallapoosa Co., Alabama, by Fielding's married sister Nancy Gill Davis and her husband Clement Davis. (See Nancy's section.)

Judging from the birth years and states of their children, Fielding and Rebecca moved to Texas round the 1860 census.  Unfortunately I have not been able to locate anyone from  the family on the 1860 or 1870 censuses.

Fielding was probably in or near Harrison Co., Texas, by 1871, because his sons William and Marcus married there in 1871.

            12. Olvin/Oliver H. Gill  b. 1829 in Wilkes Co., Georgia, d. between the 1910 and 1920 censuses, probably in Meriwether Co., Georgia.  He married Mary Ann Watson  on 22 June 1856 in Meriwether Co., Georgia.

According to the 1900 census Mary Watson Gill had given birth to 5 children, four of whom were then living.  They were:

   a. William David Gill b.  April 1857 in Meriwether Co., Georgia, d. after the 1930 census, probably in Coweta Co., Georgia.  He married Julia E Banks on  28 March 1874 in Meriwether County, Georgia.

   b. Robert Gill b. abt. 1861 in Meriwether Co., Georgia,  d. abt. 1898, probably in Meriwether Co., Georgia.   He married Beulah Plant on 23 Jun 1881 in  Meriwether Co., Georgia.

   c. John Thomas Gill b.  June 1866 in Meriwether Co., Georgia, d. after the 1920 census.  He married F. Georgia Robertson on 30 Dec 1886, Meriwether Co., Georgia.

   d. Elizabeth Louisa Gill b. 3 January 1869 in Meriwether Co., Georgia d. 20 Aug 1947 in Coweta County, Georgia. She married James Walter Plant 28 Dec 1884 in Meriwether County, Georgia.

   e. James F Gill b. February 1871 in Meriwether Co., Georgia, d. 08 Aug 1929

in  Grantville, Coweta Co., Georgia. He married Emma L. Robertson on  03 May 1896, in Meriwether Co., Georgia.

Note on his first name:  O.H. Gill was on most records as just that, O.H. Gill, but he was on a few records either as Olvin or Oliver.  O.H. was listed as "Olvin" on his marriage record and had a nephew named Olvin, so I suspect he actually was named Olvin  --  an uncommon, but recognized, man's name.

Olvin was on the 1830-1850 censuses with his parents:

Moore.

Below is the old page on William Gill born c1777 iu Virginia.  The records above are more complete.

William Gill born c1777 VA died >1850<1860, son of William Gill, and married second (DAR statement) 12 Aug. 1813 in Morgan Co., GA, Rhoda (Pope?) Poole born c1787 in SC died >1860 (he is clearly a descendent of Wm.Gill b<1738-d1780-81, because the children's names are the same.  I believe this man is the son of Wm. Gill of Iredell Co., NC born c1750 died in 1797).  If Rhoda did not have children until she was c21, then they would have had none born before c1808, which is pretty consistent with the records below.  This excludes the Thomas Y. and Hiram in the 1821 land lottery as children.

In 1828, a William Gill paid the Poor School tuition for George Woodward age 13 in Wilkes Co., GA (Wilkes Co. Papers p113. Wm. Gill witness, State vs. James Carter, 1813, Wilkes Co., GA (Wilkes Co. Papers p176), and the William Gill in the census there matches this one in age. Grand Jury Feb. 1818 (ibid p179), 1818 Grand Jury again (ibid p182). May 1822 one of three persons sued by Jeremiah Burdine for debt, inferior court, Book E fo. 163 (Ibid p206). (Andrea record #80) Wm. Gill in Wilkes Co., GA is named as Guardian for Sarah & Elizabeth Woodward orphan children of Hy Woodward 2 Oct. 1812 in a suit Wm. Woods vs. Estate of John Freeman. (Following, and children 7 and 8 from Dan Nichols) Capt. Wm. Gill officer of Col. Thomas Wooten's Regt., 180th, Dist. Co. Of Militia 9 July 1812.

He is listed in Wilkes Co., GA in the 1830 census, but in Meriwether Co. in 1840.

"One of first settlers of Meriwether Co., GA, which was laid out from Troup Co. In 1827." "Early merchants in Meriwether CO.: Thomas and William Gill." 1840 Meriwether Co., GA census page 112. 1850 Meriwether Co., GA census age 73, born in VA. "Rhody" Gill was alive at 72 in the 1860 census in Meriwether CO. GA with son John A. Gill.

1858 Will of William Gill.

Children listed in will of William Gill: Carolyn S. Gill Bradley, Susan A. Gill Donalson, Julia Gill Donalson, F. L. Gill,  Henry A. Gill, Mary E. Gill Howard, Thomas Y. Gill, Hiram M. Gill, Andrew J. Gill, Olive H. Gill, John A. Gill, Nancy Gill Davis, Rebecca L. Gill Ragland.

  1. Carolyn S. Gill married Norman Bradley
  2. Susan A. Gill born 1810-20 married Thomas Donalson.  Might be the Adoline (Adaline) Gill daughter born 1818, 1829 age 11 tuition at Wilkes Co. Poor School paid (Wilkes Co. Papers p116). 1830 Poor School tuition paid for Adaline, age 12.
  3. Henry A. Gill born c1813 in GA married Martha Repass 3 March 1836. 1813.  Juliet Wills
  4. F. L. Gill: FIELDING LEWIS GILL, b. 1817, Georgia, migrated to Texas, Upshur Co. by abt 1870. Gill. This family of Wm Gill of GA is hard to document, for I checked all sisters names and husbands' names in Heritage Quest this p.m., found very little. My Fielding L. Gill married into my Donaldson family of NC that migrated into MS then into TX.   Juliet Wills
  5. Hiram Milledge Gill born c1816 from the 1850 census died1876-80.  Married after 1850 Louisa J.   Is this Melmoth (Melwoth, Memmoth) Gill born 1820, who in 1829 had his paid tuition at the Wilkes Co. Poor School, when he was age 9 (Wilkes Co. Papers p116)? 1830 Poor School tuition paid as Melmoth age 10. 1831 Wilkes Co. Poor School tuition age age 11 (ibid p124).  He was named for Governor Milledge of Ga. An old capital of Ga. was at Milledgeville. I (Charles McDaniel) have found primary sources which call him just "Milledge Gill."  He was my wife's gg grandfather and senior members of the family now deceased could only tell us his name was Milledge.  He was a member of Phillips Legion, Cavalry, in the Civil War.
    1. William A. Gill 1855-1900 marr. Nancy E. Powell, married 2nd Permelia Hinseley.
    2. Martin Victory Gill bor 1858
    3. James B.F. Gill born 1860
    4. Hiram F. Gill born 1862
    5. Eles Gill born 1864
    6. Joseph Gill born 1871
    7. Janie M. Gill born 1876
  6. Rebecca L. Gill born 1820/5 married 17 Oct. 1839 Edward Ragland.
  7. Nancy Gill born 1823 married 28 Nov. 1839 Clement Davis
  8. Andrew Jackson Gill born c1825/8? probably Andrew "T." Gill in 1850 census in Coweta Co. in house of Edward Rageland (who married his sister).  Married 12 Nov. 1851 Mary Ann Parkinson.
  9. Mary E. Gill bc1827 married John H. Howard
  10. Thomas Young Gill born c1828.  A Thomas Gill born 1822, in 1831 at age 9 had his tuition paid in Wilkes Co. at the Poor School (Wilkes Co. Papers p124, census states bc1827)  This could be the Thomas Y. Gill born c1813 who appears to have resided all his life in Wilkes Co., GA, but I don't think they match, nor does Janice.  There are seven name coincidences. Thomas Gill named a daughter Rhoda, and a grandchild had the middle initial O, etc., so this may be correct. A Thomas W. Gill lived in Meriwether Co., GA, married 4 Sept. 1853 Agnes A. Render (Meriwether Co., GA marriage record)
  11. Julia Ann Gill (July) born c1828 GA (1850 census) (July Gill bc1829) married 13 Nov. 1851 Stanhope L. (or L.S.) Donalson (Meriwether Co., GA marriage record).
  12. Oliver H. Gill, Oliver "Olvin" Hunt Gill born 1829 in GA, both parents born in NC, married 22 Jun. 1856 in Meriwether Co., GA to Mary Ann Watson born 1830 in GA, father born in Ireland, mother born in GA. Both alive in 1880 Meriwether Co. GA census.
    1. William Gill born c1858 GA (1860 census, not present in 1880 census)
    2. Robert Gill born c1862 GA (1880 census)
    3. John Thomas Gill born 1864 GA (1880 census)
    4. Ellizabeth L. "Lizzie" Gill born 1869 in GA married 1884 James Walter Plant born 1861 GA.
    5. Jimmie Gill born 1871 GA (1880 census)
  13. John A. Gill born c1832, killed in the Civil War (1850 census) married 26 Dec. 1858 (Meriwether Co., GA marriage record) Nancy Jane Perkerson born c1834, in 1860 Meriwether Co., GA census.
    1. John D. Gill born winter of 1859/1860
