CALVO |
I am a descendent of Charles Augustus Calvo, Sr. born 2/28/1824 married
Catherine Durcine Dursee who as born 12/16/1822. Charles died 1/29/1876 in
Columbia and Catherine died 5/28/1901. Charles and his son Charles jr. were
both publishers. The first constitution for the state of S. Carolina was
published by Sr. Co. They both published and authored some works that are
catologed at the University library in Columbia. I am very interested in
finding out who the ancesters of Charles, Sr. are. They may also have published
an newspaper "Colombia Registar"? The family apparently came from Charleston
prior to the Civil War. Any info would be appreciated. 7 Nov. 2000 |

CANNON
McPHERSON |
I am seeking any information relative to Roger CANNON, and Mrs. Nancy
Anne (Spaulding) McPHERSON. I think that this couple were my ggg grandparents.
They were married in Richland County on 9 September 1790. She married first,
James McPHERSON, also in Richland County on 1 March 1785. She had two sons
by James McPherson: Thomas and James. Roger Cannon and Nancy had three children
that are proven by the Family Bible of her youngest child Thomas Cannon.
They were: Lucy Ann Cannon, b. 16 August 1795 & d. 27 June 1800; Elizer
Cannon, b. 28 August 1804 and Thomas Cannon, b. 14 October 1807. I tend to
think that there were at least two other children born earlier than Lucy
Ann: Henry Cannon and my gg grandfather, William Cannon. Nancy Anne Cannon
was born in Virginia on 2 December 1767 and died at the home of her son,
Thomas Cannon in Walton County, Georgia on 15 January 1855. 30 Sept. 2001 |

| CHILDERS |
I'm researching John Childers, born in 1821 or 1822 (may have been born
in Newberry County). John shows up on the 1850 Newberry County census.
However, the 1860 Pickens County census shows ole John and his family
(wife Margaret and daughter Mary Francis) and refers to: "P.O. Bachelors
Retreat" which appears to be in Richland County. John doesn't show on any
other census. However, I've traced a "John Childers" to the 27th SC
Infantry who apparently died in the battle of Cold Harbor in 1864. He is
buried in Hollywood Cemetary in VA and his tombstone inscription says he
was from Smiths Ford, SC. Now when I search MapQuest to find out where Smiths
Ford is located, it appears to be at the exact same spot as Bachelors Retreat
in Richland County. However, more sophisticated maps show that Smiths Ford
is in Cherokee County. I'm thoroughly confused about this. Does anyone have
any information that could shed some light on Bachelors Retreat and/or Smiths
Ford??? Thanks. 17 Jan. 2001 |

| Thomas Samuel Crayton |
I have a photograph of my husbands great grandfather, Thomas Samuel
Crayton, (ca. 1829-1889) and my question is are there any extant city
records of Columbia which might help me more closely date the photo? I know
this is tough since the city was destroyed by Sherman but I thought Id
ask. The photographic studio was Rawls Brothers Studio, Columbia, SC. It
is curious that the photo was made in Columbia since T.S. Crayton lived in
Pendleton, SC for all we knew. However his brother in law was Benjamin Sloan,
who taught at SC College and became President of the College (now USC) after
the War Between the States. So I dont know if he was just visiting
or perhaps trying to establish a business there. Dating the photo might help.
