GREEN |
I am writing a book about Dr. John Gorrie. I have copious information
on him from his arrival in Florida in 1833, but no verified information on
him from his South Carolina years. I seek information and facts on an oral
history I have been given which states that Gorrie and his mother moved to
Columbia, SC in 1824, where he went to work for Postmaster
Samuel Green, M.D. When Dr. Gorrie attended
medical school in New York State, he gave his address as Columbia, SC. He
also signed a petition, along with 123 voters, 4 wardens and the indendant
to SC legislature that the city be divided into three wards, each with its
own elected warden. I thought if I could trace Samuel Green, I might be able
to check the accuracy of my information and piece some of Gorrie's story
during his SCyears together. He doesn't appear in any census or information
I can find. Any help would be appreciated. 21 Jan. 2000 |

GRIFFIN |
Looking for Richland area GRIFFIN researchers,
especially regarding John Griffin whose family received a 250 acres grant
on the waters of the Congaree (Toms and Griffins Creek area) in the year
1764. This John and his family were part of the large "free-person-of-color"
community in Richland County living there c1790-1850. Were these the
"Sandhillers?" John was possibly half Indian, family believes his mother
to be Cherokee. His wife's father was part Saponi from North Carolina. Absalom
GRIFFIN, who lived in Richland c1770, was not listed as a person of color,
so he and John may have been a half brothers. Sons were Gideon, Morgan and
John. Daughter was Hannah or Johannah Other families that were closely related
to the Griffins from Richland area include CHAVERS, HARRIS, MANNING, SALMOND,
RAWLINSON, and JEFFERS. 4 Feb. 2000 |
