After being in the woods for some time, the Palmetto Trail emerges onto Viper Road. It then heads northwest along this paved but lightly-travelled road for a short distance before reentering the woods. Following along some trails and old dirt roads, it runs near a large power plant, then goes to the Santee-Cooper Aquaculture Center. It then follows along near the Diversion Canal for a ways before crossing over it on the new bridge.
