This Heritage Preserve is built around the remains of an old Civil War fort constructed in 1862 as part of James Island's defense. A short hiking trail takes you to some of the area's historic sites.

How to get there

Take SC #171 onto James Island and go south 7.4 kilometers past the drawbridge. Turn left onto Grimball Road and go east 0.8 km. Turn right onto Secessionville Road (also called Battery Island Drive) and go south 0.5 km. Turn left onto Fort Lamar Road, and then look for the Heritage Preserve on the left.
