Kentyre community is a small area located a few miles East of the Little Pee Dee River in what was then known as Marion County, South Carolina. Present day this area is listed in Hamer, South Carolina in Dillon County.

Credit for organizing the first worship service on the spot now occupied by Kentyre Presbyterian Church is given to an old lady Mrs. Margaret "Peggy" Cameron Edwards (my great-great-great grandmother) wife of Colin Edwards. These services were held in Mrs. Edwards’s log cabin home. Later a preacher said her house was to small and suggested that she get others interested in building seats in the grove. She succeeded in having seats built with a covering of pine tops. In front of the seats were two trees between which was placed a board to serve as a pulpit. This camp meeting was only the beginning. On April 29, 1871 Kentyre Presbyterian Church was established with 39 charter members. One was James A. McDaniel, Sr. (my great-great grandfather).

The name Kintyre was the name of a region in Scotland. Several of the early inhabitants of the community had come directly from there to settle in the Little Pee Dee area. Immediately after organizing, plans began toward erecting a permanent church structure. Membership grew rapidly and was once recognized as the largest Presbyterian congregation East of the Little Pee Dee River.
