Mrs E C Bethea
Mrs Rachel Smith Bethea, wife of E C Bethea and daughter of the late Marcus Lafayette and Sarah Hannah Smith, died at her home in Latta, Sunday, June 20, at 2 pm., after a week's illness. Though she had not enjoyed robust health for some time, her death came as a sad shock to her wide circle of friends and relatives. She was buried Monday afternoon in Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev G F Kirby, Pastor of the Methodist church, officiating, assisted by the Rev Mr Leppard, a recent neighbor and former pastor of the Baptist Church. A large concourse of friends gathered to pay their last respects to this worthy woman and cover her earthly resting place with beautiful flowers, not, however, more beautiful than her life.
Mrs Bethea was indeed a sweet spirited and kindly woman. Though she was not strong physically and was possessed to a marked degree with womanly modesty---yet her Christian influence was dynamic. Her very presence in the community radiated goodness. In the home, she was an inspiration and benediction to her husband and children who loved her with the tenderness and devotion she herself practiced and merited. Her sixty years on earth proved a blessing to all those privileged to know her. In her passing the Methodist Church loses a loyal and devoted member, the community loses a beneficient influence, and the home----? Who can estimate the value of a Christian mother?
Mrs Bethea is survived by her husband, E C Bethea., two daughters, Sadie and Flora M., Latta; three sons, E C Jr., Washington, DC., M Carlisle, Raines, and Geo Russell, Latta; one grandson, M Carlisle, Jr., and two brothers, Edward L and M R Smith of Conway.
