Walter Smith

LATTA -- Services for Walter Powell Smith, 83, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Latta United Methodist Church with burial in Union Cemetery, directed by Cooper Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home. Mr. Smith died Tuesday at St. Eugene Medical Center. Born January 1, 1916 in Marion County, he was a son of the late Thomas Howard and Ada Powell Smith. He was a retired supervisor with Southern Bell Telephone Company for 42 years, was a member of Bell South Pioneers, former Boy Scout Leader, member of Pineland Grange, was an Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Latta United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Eloise Hayes Smith; son, Dr. John Hayes Smith and daughter-in-law, Janie Hodges Smith of Murrells Inlet; daughter, Rebecca Smith Gaddy and son-in-law, Richard D. Gaddy of Latta; sister, Eunice Smith Busby of Columbia; grandchildren, Richard Quentin Gaddy, John Smith Gaddy, Rebecca Hayes Gaddy, all of Latta. He was predeceased by his son, Walter Powell Smith Jr.
