Welcome to the Marion County, South Carolina
Genealogy and History page in The SCGenWeb Project. Marion County was initially created in 1785 as
the county of Liberty in old Georgetown District, one of the original judicial districts created in
1769. In 1798 when courthouse districts were created
in South Carolina, the name "Marion District" was first used, honoring General Francis Marion of
Revolutionary War fame.
For more information on how the area that became Marion evolved,
please don't miss the county formation page.
You'll need to know this information
in order to research your Marion ancestors.
Thanks to the generosity of so many cousins
and fellow researchers, we have a substantial amount of transcribed, original data
here. Working together we've built the beginnings of
a very nice Digital Library, but there's always room for more. If you
have any original documents, photos, articles, Bible records, etc. relating to Marion County
that you would be willing to contribute to help your fellow researchers,
please contact me. We'd love to hear from you!
All material contributed to this site remains the property of the individual
contributor(s).
Many, many thanks to all of you who have contributed
data, transcribed documents, done lookups, and shared your treasures with all of us.
What a great bunch of folks y'all are!
