The transfer of slaves, either through sale or gift, was recorded in Deed books.
The earliest of these "deeds" would have been recorded in Charleston, where all legal documents in
South Carolina were filed until 1785. Please note that our area was in the vast administrative boundaries of
Craven County up until the creation of judicial districts in 1769; then in Georgetown District; then Marion
District, Liberty County; then Marion District, Marion County.
