A FEW NOTES ABOUT THE 1870 FEDERAL CENSUS FOR MARION COUNTY:
There are known problems with the 1870 census:
- Some residents were NOT enumerated. If your ancestors are "missing", check the
federal Agricultural Schedule, and/or the 1869 South Carolina State census.
- Children born in census year. The column for "Month if born in
Census Year",
was to be limited to children born between June 2, 1869 and June 1, 1870. The census taker,
visiting after June 1, 1870, apparently got confused and
included all children living at the time of his visit, regardless of when they were born.
For children born after June 1, 1870 (the cut-off date), you will see that the
census taker noted the month of birth, but later struck through the entry.
Townships: The 1870 Federal Census was the first federal census to use
townships laid out under the South Carolina State Constitution of 1868.
- Florence County was formed in 1888, taking four townships from
southwestern Marion County:
Jeffries, McMillan, Cain (includes town of Pamplico), and Pee Dee.
- Dillon County was formed in 1910, taking six townships from
upper Marion County:
Bethea, Carmichael, Harleesville, Hillsboro, Kirby, and Manning.
- Check the Old Marion Townships Map
for relative locations of all townships.
