ROYAL or COLONIAL PLATS on LITTLE PEE DEE RIVER

I will be contributing a list of people who obtained Royal plats on the Little Pee Dee River. These plats were recorded between 1735 and 1775. Usually, they were surveys for lands subsequently granted to the same individual by the King of England, known now as the Royal or Colonial Plats.

After the Revolutionary War, the State of South Carolina passed laws regarding the granting of lands. Grants and plats for the State of SC are in totally different record series, indexed, and available from the Archives.

Prior to the Royal or Colonial grants, were the Proprietary grants. Those are also stored at the SC Archives. However, any land granted in the area that is now Marion Co during the Proprietary period would have been granted probably for speculation only (as were many of the Royal grants) and not very helpful for those researching Marion Co.

The following list was obtained at the SC Archives, from their Alphabetical Index to the Royal or Colonial Plats. This index is on microfilm. It requires a little explanation.

Plats (for those who are new to this), are just small maps to a person's land. They are used often with deeds, but when land was to be granted by the king, or the state, the land had to be surveyed, and the plat recorded.

The index shows the first plat recorded on the Little Pee Dee River in 1735. That, however, can be misleading, as there could have been earlier grants/plats in the area that did not mention the river, or that were made when the Little Pee Dee was known by an earlier name.

Also note, that just because land was surveyed and a plat recorded, there is not always a grant recorded for that person for that land. Sometimes the surveys were sold to other individuals. Sometimes the fees for the grant were not paid, and the plats just lay there till someone else took up the land. I think this happened when someone applied for a grant, had the land surveyed, then moved away from the area before the grant was issued. Fees had to be paid before the grant was issued, and I guess some just could not afford the fees.

Bear in mind, that not everyone who came necessarily applied for plats and land grants. Some were squatters; some just passing through. Some, I feel certain, purchased land from those who already had obtained a land grant.

Re the information given in the plats: often there will be other waterways or landmarks mentioned, which makes it easier to locate the actual site of the land. There is always given the name(s) of anyone whose land bounded the newly surveyed land, though often in these early plats they bounded only on "vacant land." Once in awhile, but rarely, a family relationship or clue is found.

The land grants are a totally different record series. I do not have that index. Inquiries for obtaining plats and/or grants should be made to the SC Archives.

This list is chronological, not alphabetical. This Archives index is alphabetical, but this particular entry is for LITTLE PEE DEE RIVER and not the individual who obtained the plat. The Archives index would also show all the Royal Plats recorded for an individual under that individual's name. In other words, these are ALL the entries for surveys of land in which Little Pee Dee is mentioned in the body of the plat.

One final note - just because it says Little Pee Dee doesn't necessarily mean the land bounded on the river, though in most cases it did. Plats sometimes say 'on the waters of Little Pee Dee' which CAN mean it was on Buck Swamp for instance, which is a tributary of Little Pee Dee, and thus some of the 'waters of Little Pee Dee.' Also remember that some of the headwaters of Little Pee Dee are in Marlboro County, so a few of the lands may lie there. Little Pee Dee also forms most of the boundary between Marion Co and Horry Co, so some of these lands are in what is now Horry.

Regarding the information in the list below: The first name is the person in whose name the plat was recorded; the description is part of that given in the plat itself - the date is the date of recording, not the date of the survey; the final series of numbers is the Archives numbering system for locating the plat. It refers to the record series, the volume, the page number, and the item number on that page. You will need all of these if ordering the plat. Giles, Wm. Lowth (sic); proved: Hugh Giles, 19 Jul 1771 before Joseph 
Britton, one of his Majestys Justices of the peace for (Craven County);

[Entries in "Marion Co SC Abstracts of Deeds vol 1" abstracted by Lucille
Utley, edited and published 1996 by Alita Suttcliffe, show the following chain
of ownership of the above lands:  Lands granted to Jacob Goodyer Senr, sold by
him to Jacob Goodyer Junr, sold by him in (1771 and recorded in Charleston) to
James Ford, (missing link in chain- nothing found to show how Barfield had
land from James Ford), sold in 1801 by Jesse Barfield to Benjamin Lewis, by
him in 1806 to Samuel Lewis. Descriptions show that this land was on SW side
of Little Pee Dee River bounding the river; on head of the Back Swamp;
bounding later grants to James Sineth and nearJacob's Sand Ridge, Wolf Trap
Branch, and Grassey Lake. Presumably the chain can be followed on down to the
present.]

[I offer the following as an example of where these plats made for unknown
individuals can lead...  Various deeds recorded in Marion Co show that the
lands laid out for Thomas Obrien were located on the north side of Buck Swamp.
Parts of the land grant to Thomas Obrien/Obriant/Obryant were later sold as
follows:
In 1793 by Micajah HARRALSON, Lydia OBRIANT, Pheby Harralson, Jeremiah
Harralson, Abigill Harralson, and Sary RICE to Isom COWARD (A/114).  In 1793
by Jesse RICE to Isom Coward, dower released by Sary Rice wife of Jesse Rice
(A/116).  In 1794 by Isom COWARD and wife Susanna Coward to Zedekiah OWEN
(A/118).  In 1798 by Zedekiah OWEN to Saml. SMITH, dower released by Mary Owen
wife of Zedekiah (1/120).  In 1809 by Daniel MOODY to Samuel Smith, dower
released by Elizabeth Moody wife of Daniel Moody (E/113). No record found of
how Moody acquired this land.]
