Newspapers are a wonderful resource for genealogists, providing a history of our
ancestors through birth, marriage and death announcements, obituaries, and other
news stories pertaining to daily life in the community. Many of the surviving old newspaper
issues have been microfilmed and/or abstracted, and you should check with your local genealogy
and LDS libraries
to see what is available and what may be ordered through interlibrary loan. Titles of published
resources, where known, are shown below.
There was, so far as I know, no newspaper published in old Marion County until The Marion Star
began operations in 1852. Prior to that time, notices and articles pertaining to Marion residents would
have appeared in various newspapers. In general,
You'll also want to check church newspapers, such as the Southern Christian Advocate,
neighboring county newspapers, and state-wide newspapers.

Every account I've seen states that The Marion Star began publication May 4, 1852 with
C. W. Miller as editor and V. Little as publisher, but I read an
article which states that the newspaper was established by V. Little in 1846 then
sold to a Charleston attorney, A.J. Requier, in 1848. Whether any issues were published 1846-48, I do not
know but found it an interesting historical note.
The 1860 Marion County census shows that V. Little,
occupation "publisher", was born in Georgia.
He must have married a bit later than usual; his age is given as 35 and his eldest
child is four years old.
