Biography of Henry C. Brewer

Henry C. Brewer (1829-1893) was one of the approximately 16 children of Asa Brewer (c1780-c1858) and his wife, Elizabeth Hayes.

Henry married Martha Jane Goodyear in 1870, one of the ten daughters of John Goodyear and his wife Cenith (Miller?) Goodyear. Henry and Martha resided and are buried on their farm in what is now Kemper Community, in Marion (now Dillon) County, South Carolina. Henry's lands were given to him by his father in 1851, and were part of an 1801 land grant to John Elvington / Yelverton.

Henry and Martha had one child, John Kemper "Kemp" Brewer (1871-1937). Mr. Kemp married his second cousin, Cynthia Ann "Tink" Hayes, daughter of Frank Hayes (son of Ithamer Hayes and his third wife, Ava Jane Brewer Hayes who was a sister of Henry C. Brewer). Ms. Tink's mother was Louisiana Missouri Rogers Hayes (daughter of Zaney D. Rogers and Elizabeth Grainger).

Henry and Martha Jane Goodyear Brewer are buried at the Brewer Family Cemetery in Kemper Community. Henry's stone is standing, but Martha's stone cannot be found.

Sources: various Brewer and Goodyear family deeds, Kemp Brewer Bible record, census records, tombstones, death certificates, interviews with descendants and stories my grandfather told me. I am descended from Henry's sister, Celia Brewer Church.
