Robert C. HAMER

Southern Christian Advocate, 1867-1878, issue dated April 30, 1878 Vol 41 # 17 pg 68 col 4 from the Sandor Teszler Library of Wofford College:

Robert C Hamer was born in Marlboro District, SC., October 15, 1801; was married to Miss Mary Bethea in 1828; died in Marion County, SC., January 28, 1878. A few years after his marriage, Mrs Hamer died, leaving four small children to the care of the father, three of whom still survive. He was an honest man. His course through life was characterized by the most scrupulous integrity. He made it a rule never to violate a promise, and he held in detestation the man who without unavoidable cause failed to redeem his pledges. He was a man of fine business capacity. Beginning life with limited resources by dint (?cgk) of an energy that was remarkable and strict economy he amassed a handsome fortune; and while he was considered by some to be exacting in his business transactions, he was acknowledged by all to be honorable in his dealing. He was an unobtrusive man, yet he was a man of strong convictions, and when called upon to express his views on any subject, he did it frankly and independently. He was a kind father. While his children were growing up, he afforded them ample opportunities for preparing themselves for usefulness in coming life, and he continued to labor for their welfare as long as he lived. He joined the Methodist Church when quite young, and remained in its communion til the day of his death. His attachment to the Church was most ardent, insomuch that those who did not know him well might have considered him uncharitable toward other denominations, but this doubtless is the explanation; not that he loved others less, but his own more. His health had for several years been somewhat feeble, but toward the last his constitution gave way rapidly until---surrounded by his family---death terminated his protracted earthly pilgrimage on the date above given. His epitaph is with his friends. W C P
