Mary Jane HAYES

Hays: Miss Mary Jane Hays was born near Kirby's Crossroads in what was then Marion County, SC, February 3, 1839, and died at the home of her niece in the town of Marion, February 6, 1914, aged seventy five years and three days. She was the daughter of the Rev Eben Hays and wife, and one of fourteen children, all now gone except for two brothers and two sisters.

"Miss Mary Jane", as everyone called her, was brought up in a religious home and early became a Christian, and a member of the Methodist Church. The graces of a Christian were most beautifully developed in her life, and grew richer and sweeter as the years multiplied. She was a woman of strong faith. It was a pleasure to be in her company in her last years. These years brought her many sorrows and much of bodily suffering, but she bore it all so sweetly. She never married, but devoted her life in loving service to her parents until their death, and after that to her youngest brother, John David, who likewise never married. For a number of years, these two lived together alone in a beautiful devotion to each other. For some time, she had been listening and longing for the call to go home, and was ready when it came. Her last sickness was short, her death sudden; there was no dying testimony, but none was needed. She was buried at Bethesda, near her childhood home, and by the graves of her loved ones. She rests in peace awaiting the call to the first resurrection. J S Beasley
