Mrs Jane Smith BETHEA
Mrs Jane Smith, beloved wife of Dr J J Bethea, was born May 18, 1838, and died July 23, 1905. Mrs Bethea was blessed with Christian parents, her mother being a sister of Rev T E Wannamaker, of the S C Conference, and her father, Rev John L Smith, a worthy local preacher in Marion County for many years. Brought up under the influences of such a home, it is not surprising that she gave her heart to God when a girl of only twelve years, and devoted her entire life of nearly seventy years to the service of Christ and His Church.
Sister Bethea was not a Christian in name alone; she knew the love of God and rejoiced in conscious communion with her Lord. She loved the house of God, and it was an inspiration to see her and her aged husband wending their way to the sanctuary on the holy Sabbath, and that even when their poor steps were feeble and their health poor. She and the Doctor married in September, 1856, and she was all that a wife could be to a loving husband--a true helpmeet. She was the mother of five children, only two of whom are now living---Dr J M Bethea, of Mullins, and Mr Lawrence Bethea, of Fork, SC. May God's mercy richly abide upon them and upon the aged husband who survives, though in feebleness extreme. T C O'Dell
