A J Herring, Policeman, 40, Of Mullins Dies
Mullins--Police Sergeant Alfred J. Herring, 40, died Thursday night from a heart attack while investigating an auto-train accident in Mullins.
The funeral will be at 4pm Saturday at Cox-Collins Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cedardale Cemetery.
He was born in Manning County, a son of Miles and Janie Brown Herring and was married to the former Mary Alice Smith. He had been with the Mullins Police force for 14 years. Mr Herring was a member of the First Baptist Church, Woodmen of the World and South Carolina Law Enforcement Association.
Surviving besides his widow and father are a son, Alfred J Herring, Jr of the home; four daughters, Polly and Jean Herring of the home and Deborah and Kathy Herring of Savannah, Ga; three brothers, Liston and Billy Wayne Herring of Mullins, Carl Herring of Whiteville, NC.; four sisters, Mrs Joe Harrelson of Mullins, Mrs Sally Byrd of Marion, Mrs Issac Newberry of Laurinburg, NC., and Mrs Bessie Jackson of Dillon.
