Mullins Man Dies In Vietnam Action
Mullins--Lance Cpl. Alfred J Herring, Jr., 19, of the US Marine Corps, died Sept 20 as a result of hostile action.
Funeral plans will be announced by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Cpl Herring was born in Marion County, a son of Mrs Hazel McDonald Lancaster and the late Alfred J Herring, Sr. He was a member of the Woodman of the World and was a 1960 graduate of Mullins High School. He enlisted in the Marines in June 1969, and had been in Vietnam since February.
Surviving are his mother of Tabor City, NC.; his step-mother, Mrs Mary Alice Herring of Mullins; paternal grandfather, Miles Herring of Mullins; maternal grandmother, Mrs Addie McDonald of Floydale; four sisters, Misses Polly and Jean Herring of Mullins and Misses Deborah and Kathy Herring of Tabor City; two half-brothers, Michael and Kevin Lancaster of Tabor City; and a half-sister, Miss Lorianne Lancaster of Tabor City.
