Marion Man Killed When Car Hits Tree.
Marion--Special to the State--A 52-year old Marion man was killed just after midnight Saturday when the car he was driving struck a tree and overturned here.
Coroner William L Drew identified the victim as Grady C Rich of 929 Cherokee Ave.
He operated a liquor store here and was employed as a clerk at the Post Office.
Drew said Rich was driving on Manning Street, almost in the heart of
Marion business district when his car hit a tree, careened across the street,
skidded about 30 feet and came to rest on its top in a small vacant lot.
Police righted the car and freed Rich from the wreckage. He was pronounced dead by Coroner Drew and Dr H V Coleman.
The fatality was the first in the city of Marion this year and the second in Marion County.
Funeral services will be at 4pm Sunday at Smith Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mr Rich was a son of the late I O and Mary Avant Rich of Marion.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs Martha D Rich; three daughters, Mrs Patricia R Cotton of Statesville, NC., Mrs Vicky R Lett of Florence and Miss Mary Ellen Rich of the home; two sisters, Mrs Virginia R Freeman of Marion and Mrs Dorothy R Loyd of Florence; a brother, Edward Rich of Marion.
