Capt. Mathew Stanley Dead
Veteran of Mexican War and Captain in the ConfederacyCapt. Mathew B. Stanley, one of the few surviving veterans of the Mexican war, died at his home near Centenary Sunday morning aged 90 years. Capt. Stanley was also a veteran of the civil war having survived as captain in the first South Carolina regiment commanded by Col. Maxsey Gregg. This regiment participated in the capture of Ft Sumter. Capt. Stanley was a native of Darlington, but moved to Marion county in his early boyhood. He was a remarkably well preserved man and despite his advanced years he enjoyed excellent health until shortly before his death. He was a brother-in-law of the late Col. E. A. Bethea and during his long life he was a frequent visitor to this end of the county where he has scores of friends both young and old who are pained to hear of his passing.
