WILL OF
PHILIP BETHEA
In the Name of God Amen
I Philip Bethea of South Carolina & Marion District being weak of Body
but of Perfect Mind & Memory thanks be to God for the same & Calling to Mind
the mortallity of My Body & Knowing that it is Appointed for all men Once to
Die Do make & Ordain this my last Will & Testament (That is to say) first I
recomend my Soul to the Hands of Almighty God that gave it & my Body to the
Earth to be buried in a Christian like manner at the Discretion of My
Executors nothing Doubting but I Shall receive the same by the Resurection of
Jesus Christ & as Touching such worldly Property as it hath been pleased God
to Blefs me with in this life I give & dispose of in the following manner
(That is to say) I lend to my well beloved Wife Anne Bethea all My Estate
both Real and Personal of Every description (Except as is hereafter Excepted)
during her natural Life & out of the Said Estate I give to her My Sd Wife the
following Property to be at her Dispotial forever (To wit)
I Give to Anna My well beloved Wife one negro woman named Rena with her Child
Drusila Also Also [[2nd Also crossed out]] two negro wimen both named Dinah
also one negro man named Aaron Also one Negro boy Named Saul also one negro
Girl named Hannah to be at her Dispotial forever - - -
It is my will & Desire that at the Decease of My wife that My Executors do
Sell all My Land on the S W Side of Little Pee Dee & Sweat Swamp Giving one
years Credit & the money Arising from such land to be equally divided between
the following persons (To witt) My brother Jefse Bethea & Henery Trawick
William Trawick Goodman Trawick Tristram Bethea William Bethea John Bethea
Cade Bethea Jeremiah Waters John Brady Bennet Andrews & Herod Stackhouse.
My land where John Crop now lives I give & bequeath to my Nephew Philip
Bethea that is gone over the Mountain and to

John Crop to be Equaly Devided between the Sd Phillip & John at my Decease.
Sd John Crop to pay fourteen Dollars /to Capn Jones/ I give & bequeath to my
Nephew William Trawick My negro boy Adam to be his after the Decease of my
wife.
It is my Will & Desire that the balance of my land being the land on which I
now live on to be sold at My. Wifes Decease by My Executors Giving Two years
Credit Purchasers to /give / Bond and Good Security & the money arising from
Sd land I give to the following persons (To witt) the Three Sons of Jefse
Bethea My Wifes Brother (that is dead) by the names of (John Bethea Tristram
Bethea & Thomas Bethea) & to Simeon Bethea that is gone over the Mountains &
to Jean Calcut (& to Elisha Bethea & William Bethea of North Carolina) & to
Timothy Rodgers & to Jefse Bethea Son of Goodman Bethea & one Equal Share
with the Above Named Persons to be appropriated - - - - - - - - - - - and to
Jefse Bethea My Brother - to the Repairs of Liberty Chappell & the Grave
Yard/ all to have Equal Shares Alike
My lent Money being About Twelve Hundred Dollars I Desire My Executors to
Colect & Return to My Wife. I Give My Watch to My Nephew Hugh Bethea My Shot
bag to Esqr Harllee My Wife will give as soon as I am Dead My Shot gun to
William Trawick My Rifle to Isac & young John Stackhouse at My Decease. My
Stock of Cattle at Mr Hendersons My Wife will give out of Sd Stock one Cow &
Calf to the Revd. James Harris one Cow & Calf to Mrs. Thompson one Cow & Calf
to the Widow McRae one Beef to Mr Henderson & take the Rest home-The Little
Stock at the Revd. Mr Andrews I give to him my Riding Sadle My. wife will
Give to Capn Jones my Bridle to Majr. McQueen & one Cow & Calf to Mrs
McIntyre My Wife will Give to My Executors on their entering on their
Executorship Twenty five Dollars each over and above their Commifsions by Law.
Mr Christopher May take My Horse Myder Alley & leave his horse to work on the
farm
It is my Desire that the Revd Mr Travis & the Revd Mr Christopher Attend My
funerall & that My Wife give them ten Dollars

It is my will & Desire that as Soon as convenient After my decease that My
Executors do Collect all Moneys Due Me & pay all my Just Debts & Return the
Ballance to My Wife I do Nominate & Appoint My Beloved friends the Revd.
Joseph Travis James Ervine Snr Majr James McQueen & Thos Harllee as my
Executors of this My last Will & Testament & if any controversy Should Arise
About the Meaning of this My Will - - My Executors Shall be the Judges of My
Meaning.
It is My Will & Desire that My Executors Should as soon as convenient After
My Decease take My negro boys Randal & Peter & cary them Of & Sell them &
Return the Money to My Wife And Lastly I do hereby Revoke & Disanull all
other Wills by Me Made heretofore of Every Description and I do hereby.
Ratify & confirm this My last Will & Testament in Witnefs Whereof I have
hereunto Set My hand & Seal this Seventeenth Day of Sepr. ano Dom1. One
Thousand Eight Hundred & Fourteen
