WILL OF
STEPHEN BRITTON
In the name of God Amen I Stephen Britton of Marion District in the State of South
Carolina A Planter being sick of body but of sound and disposing mind memory and
understanding do make this my will in the manner following I give and devise unto
Mr. Thomas Carr in trust for the use benefit and behoof of a free Coloured Girl named
Sarah of about Fifteen years of age the following Negroes to Wit Member, old Dick,
Billy, Phil, July, Hester, Dianna, Abraham, Jin, Old Hannah, Cupid, old Jupiter, Toney,
Tom, Boson Sue, Peg, Willebe, Downs, and Ned and the present and future ifsue and
increase of such of the above named Negroes as are females unto the said Thomas
Carr in trust as before mentioned for the sole and separate use benefit and behoof of
the said free coloured Girl called Sarah and the lawfull ifsue of her body I further
Give devise and bequeath unto the said Thomas Carr for the sole and separate use
benefit and behoof of the said free coloured Girl called Sarah all my stock of Cattle
Horses Hogs and all other Kinds of stock wheresoever the same be found to the said free
coloured Girl named Sarah and the lawful ifsue of her body I do further give devise and
bequeath all my real Estate together with all my household and Kitchen furture plantation
tools of all Kinds Boat or Boats and Canoes unto the said Thomas Carr in Trust for the
said use and benefit and behoof of the said free coloured Girl Sarah before spoken and
the lawful ifsue of her body forever And in case the said free Coloured Girl Sarah Shall
die a minor or under the age of twenty one years or without lawful ifsue of her body Then
and and in that case it is my will and desire that the real and personal Estate above spoken
of and the ifsue and increase of such of the above mentioned negroes as are females
together with all the stock above mentioned and described and also the Household and
Kitchen furniture & Plantation tools which shall be found at the time the sd free coloured
Girl Sarah shall die as aforesaid that is without lawfull ifsue or before she arrives to the
years above mentioned and in that case It is my will and desire that all my Real and
Personal Estate go to and be equally divided by beloved Nephews Joseph Britton Junior
and Stephen Britton sons of Moses Britton I give devise and bequeath unto my beloved
Nephew Stephen Britton son of Moses Britton one negro named Little Duk and to the
lawfull ifsue of his body and in case he the sd Stephen Britton should die without lawfull
ifsue or under the age of Twenty one years then my will is that the sd Negro called little
Duk shall go to and belong to Joseph Britton the brother of the said Stephen Britton and
to his Heirs forever Lastly I nominate constitute and Appoint my Friends Thomas Carr
and William Belune Executors of this my last will and Testament Revoking and disa-
nulling all and every legacy or bequeath before made by me In Witnefs Whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and Seal this 24th Day of May in the year of our Lord One
thousand eight hundred and ten and in the Thirty fourth year of American Independence
Signed Sealed delivered and published by the sd Stephen Britton as for his last Will and
Testament in the presents of us who being in his presents and at his request have sub-
scribed our names as witnefses thereto
