WILL OF JAMES CAMPBELL
In the Name of God Amen. I James Campbell of Marion District and State of South Carolina being
at this time in a low situation of Body but of sound and perfect Mind and Memory and calling to
mind the Uncertainty of my life Knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do hereby make
and ordain this to be/my last Will and Testament revoking and disannuling all other
wills by me heretofore made. In the first I recommend my soul into the hands of
Almighty God who first gave it to me And my Body to be Interred in a decent and Christian like
manner. and as to such worldly goods as God has been pleased to blefs me with I give and dispose
of in form and Manner following--
Item. I give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife Elisabeth Campbell The plantation whereon I now
live together with all my lands adjoining thereto, also two Negroes named Snipe and Jefsy also one
Bay Horse called Shakespear and all my Stock of Cattle Hogs and Goats. and all my Household
and Kitchen furniture and plantation Tools to be hers during her natural life and after her decease
the whole of the aforesaid property to be Kept together for the benefit of my Children untill my
youngest Daughter Margaret Stacey Campbell arrives to the age of Eighteen years then
/an equal Division of the whole of the Lands Negroes Stock and Furniture
aforementioned to be made between my four Children Mary W. Campbell, Samuel Campbell,
James W. Campbell and Margaret S Campbell or the surviving ones of them or their Heirs and
subject to no charges that may be against My Daughter Margaret S. Campbell For Schooling and Clothing.
Item I give and bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Mary W. Campbell Two Negroes (Viz) Amy
and her Daughter Elvira also one Bay horse named Demon the Negroes with their future Increase to
be her and heirs. /forever Also Will that my Executors as soon as convenient after
my decease Do purchase for her out of my Estate a sufficient quantity of new feathers to make her
a good Bed.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my beloved Son Samuel Campbell Three Negroes (Viz) Sarah and
her two Children Robbin and Martha With their future Increase to him and his heirs forever Also one horse Called Belvedare
Item. I give and bequeath unto my beloved Son James W. Campbell two Negroes (Viz) Jude and
Lucy with their future increase to him and his heirs forever--
Item. I give and bequeath unto/my beloved Daughter Margaret S. Campbell two
Negroes (viz) Hester and Elisa with their future increase to her and heirs forever--
Item. It is my Will and request that none of My Children get possesion of any of the above Legacies
of property untill my Sons arrive to the age of twenty one years and my Daughters to the
/age of eighteen years. and that if either of my Children should Die without lawful
begotten children of their Bodies either before or after age that their part or share of my Estate be
returned back to my Estate between and be equally divided between my then
Surviving Children or their heirs--
Item. I will that my Negroe Burgoine be Kept on the plantation as Estate property for the benefit of
my family untill my youngest Daughter Margaret S Campbell arrives to the age of Eighteen years and then to be sold and/an equal Division of the sale be made Among all my then surviving
Children or their heirs
Item. Whereas I have been at much trouble and Expense in raising Clothing and Schooling My
/niece Tabitha M Stewart and has left an open Account against her for the same, it is
my request & desire that my after named Executors will, on obtaining from her when she comes of
age a Compleat acquittance or discharge for all/or any demands against my Estate that
they give her up all/her own property and destroy the Account I have against her -
Also be it Known that part of the Lands which I hold pofsesion of at this time I purchased from
Jofeph Wilson but have obtained no Titles for the same Therefore request that as soon as
convenient after my Decease that Robert William Wilson and Hugh Wilson whom I shall appoint
as part of my Executors will apply and procure sufficent Titles to the same to be disposed of as
before directed --
And Lastly I do hereby Nominate appoint and constitute my three Brothers-in-Law to this my last
Will as my Lawful Executors (Viz) Robert William Wilson Hugh Wilson and Joseph Wilson to Act
according to the true Interet and Meaning of this my last will and Testament
In Witnefs Whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the nineteenth day of March in the year of
our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Sixteen and of the fortieth year of the American
Independence---
