WILL OF WILLIAM PLEDGER In the name of God Amen, the Tenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty five, I William Pledger of the District of Marlborough in the State of South Carolina Being in health of Body and of Sound Mind and memory thanks be to God for the same Do make this my last Will and Testament in manner---first, I lend to my beloved wife Elizabeth Pledger for and During the term of her Natural life All the Estate Real and Personal of which I am no possessed of Every Kind and description, and after her death the whole to be divided in the following manner--- 2nd. I give to my son William Ellis Pledger his Heirs and Afsigns in addition to the tracts of land which I have already conveyed to him by deed of gift, the following land the priviledge of running his new Mill race through that part of land it now runs through Also the Priviledge of cutting Timber or making a dam and Raising the water at the upper end of his Mill dam as high as he may think necessary for the use of his mill. Also at the death of my wife I give and bequeath to Said William Ellis Pledger six Negroes namely, Rose, Amy, Juber, Sam, Guina, Sam, Barbra. 3rd. I give to my friends John Terrel Josiah J. Evans James Fornefs Sen. James Irby and my son William Fllis [Ellis] Pledger the following Tracts of land one tract of land laying between Herrindine prong and Crooked creek next to Mrs. Croslands land the Sawing Timber excepted. Also the following eight Negroes namely, Cate, Liddy, Jack, Aron, Imay, Mark, Mingo, and Dilsey In Trust Nevertheless to permit my daughter Mary Ann Emanuel to use and Enjoy the same to her Sole and separate use without the Controls or interference of her Husband During the term of her Natural life and after her death to convey the same to the heirs of her body. But should my said daughter Die leaving no heirs of her body surviving her, then I give WILL OF WILLIAM PLEDGER PAGE 2 the said Above land and Negroes to the said John Terrel, Josiah J. Evans James Fornefs Sen. James Irby and my son William Ellis Pledger in trust to permit my son Philip William Pledger to use occupy and enjoy the same during his natural life and after his death to convey the same to the use of the heirs of his body, 4th. I give to the said John Terrel, Josiah J. Evans james Fornefs Sen. James Irby and my son William Ellis Pledger the following tracts of land (viz) the Upper half of a tract of land laying between Herrindine prong and Crooked Creek the Sawing Timber excepted and a part of a tract laying above the Road leading from Hersey's Mill to Crooked Bridge also eight Negroes namely, Agg, Pen, Sharlot, Nelson, Isaack, Ned, Little Phil, & Judy in trust nevertheless to permit my daughter Caroline Williams to use pofsefs and enjoy the same without the Controle of her husband During her natural life and after her death to convey the same to her Children, should She leave any surviving her----But should she die without any ofsue surviving her Wm. Pledger ############################################################################ ##################### ( 2nd Page of original Will) then to permit my daughter Mary Ann Emanuel to use and enjoy the same in the manner herein before directed in Relation to the land and Negroes the use of Which is given her. 5th. I give to the said John Terrle Josiah J. Evans James Fornefs Sen. and James Irby and my son William Ellis Pledger All my Lands which I have not herein before disposed of Also Twenty three Negroes namely, Frank, Winn, Linden, Little Rachel, Big Rachel, Juno, Bettem Mary, Old Cato, Young Cato, Big Phil, Bob, Jim, Stephen, Ishmel, Moses, Will, London, Absolam, Minner, Ephriam, Sam, & Colin in trust nevertheless to permit my son Phillip William Pledger to use enjoy the same during his natural life and after his death to Convey the WILL OF WILLIAM PLEDGER PAGE 3 same to the heirs of his body. But should he die without anu [any] such heirs then the said Trustees are to divide the same equally Amongst my surviveing Children The Ifsue of any deceased child takeing the share of any of my children who may be then dead, but the share of my daughter Mary Ann and Caroline is to be subject to the same trusts and Limitations over as the Estate the use of which is herein before given to them, this clause is however intended to prevent my son Philip from wasting the property, therefore should he prove to be industruois and frugal I do hereby Authorize and impower the said Trustees or a Majority of them should they think it prudent to do so to convey the property herebefore described to him absolute. When ever he shall be married and have Child or Children and in case both my daughter Mary Ann and Caroline should die Without leaving any children surviving them, then I give the Estate hereinbefore left to their use to such of my other children as may then be living or their heirs----I do hereby appoint my wife Elizabeth Pledger my sole Executrix during her natural life and after her death I do hereby consititute and appoint John Terrel Josiah J. Evans, James Fornefs, James Irby and my son William Ellis Pledger my sole and only executors of this my last Will and Testament ["and" inserted between the lines] I do utterly Disallow Revoke and Diannul all andEvery other former Wills or Bequeaths Ratifying and Confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament.
