Have found my grandfather, Samuel A. JOHNSTON listed on the 1920 census in a orphan house in Charleston. The orphan hous was on Calhoun Street. He also had two sisters in the orphanage with him and they are also listed. The mother was still living and somewhere nearby. Want to get the address of the orphan house in hopes of checking out the records of these children. Know the mother's first name was Della, but not her maiden name. The family lived in AL and think all the children were born in AL. Hope the records are still in Charleston on this orphan house. Have checked the LDS Family History librarys locally, but can't find any orphan houses listed.

Seeking info on Francis NELSON b. ca 1810 Charleston, SC ?, sometimes erroneously listed as Talbot County, GA. He d. bef 6 December 1838 Charleston; another researcher noted his will was listed on "Page 10, Cha. Book 31" but unable to make the trip to Charleston to investigate at this time. His first name may have been Thomas. His wife Millie Ann TRICE b. ca 1813 GA, preceded him in death by abt a year; they left two orphans who were raised by her parents. Francis was the son of a Thomas NELSON, b. ca 1778 SC, who with his wife Elizabeth, b. SC or Ireland ca 1775, and brother Gideon accompanied other families in a wagon train to AL in 1827. Instead they stopped in Talbot/Upson Co GA where a good number of their descendants still live. There is conflicting info on the parents of this Thomas and Gideon NELSON, generally believed to have been the sons of a Revolutionary War soldier also named Thomas and a Jane ? of  Ireland or England.
Do not believe this branch of NELSONs is related to the Virginia branch. Have info on these NELSONs, willing to share and would correspond with any NELSON descendants still remaining in the Charleston area.

Jacob was the grandfather of Mary A. E. DAVIS

Seeking info on family of James J. O'NEILL b. 1845 probably in Charleston. May have been the son of Thomas and Molly READ O'NEIL, Irish Catholic immigrants. Had one sister, Mollie, with whom he lost touch after Civil War. Parents died while children were young. Had family "up north". Have located orphan girl, Mary Ann O'NEILL b. ca. 1849, NY, whose father was a railroad man, with brother the right age to be my James. This girl was bound out to the P. V. BRANDT family in 1863 when the orphanage was moved inland. Also suspect connection to the Reverand Patrick O'NEILL, Catholic priest of St. Patrick's Church during this time period from Kilkenny, IR. James J. fought with the Irish Volunteers in Civil War and then migrated west to Clarke Co., MS where he died in 1926.
