SMITH
Seeking info on maternal grandfather, Peter Scanlon SMITH b. 2 October 1882, #1 Limehouse Street, Charleston. His parents were John Gray and Elizabeth Josephine KNAPP SMITH. Elizabeth SMITH was also born at #1 Limehouse Street. Peter SMITH was a marine engineer who traveled to Panama in 1912 to work on the construction of the Panama Canal. He left Panama in 1917. Records
in my possession show that he was employed by several different shipping lines as a Chief Engineer after he left Panama. Believe that he died sometime around 1944-45 because in 1945, Sunshine ULLMAN, a probate lawyer, wrote letters of inquiry to the Panama Canal Commission in an attempt to locate my grandmother, Waldina SMITH. Since Ms. ULLMAN worked in Manhattan, NY, Peter most likely died in that state. The address that he gave as his place of residence at the time that he applied for work in the Canal Zone in 1912 was: 235 East 40th Street, Borough of Manhattan. On the same application, he recorded his father's adddress as 130 Church Street, Charleston, SC.
