( Biography)
Established in 1849, the
Keowee Courier is one of the oldest weekly newspapers in the Southeastern United
States. According to the
history of the Courier
published by the Pickens County South Carolina Genealogy web site, the first
publisher was W. H. Trimmier.
Now located in a historic two-story building on Short Street, across from the
Oconee County Courthouse, the Courier is the hometown newspaper for beautiful
Walhalla, South Carolina (the Oconee County seat) and also serves the nearby
communities of West Union, Salem, Tamassee, Keowee Community, Keowee Key and
Mountain Rest.
The newspaper has been continually published for 147 years. Published daily for a period during WWI, the newspaper now has a Wednesday publication date. It is published by Keowee Publications, Inc. and is edited by Ashton Hester.
