Early Settlers

Gideon Hagood, ancestor of Clayton Rhodes, had an early plantation, "Mt. Ararat," which was near the present day village of Martin. . Gideon Hagood was the first Ordinary of Barnwell District and at one time was the pastor of Mt. Hope Church not far from his home.

His daughter Elivira Ann Hagood obtained Armenia Plantation (Orange Grove) near Johnson's Landing when her husband James McPherson died in 1829.
